The Anni Dewani Murder Case

MOST people gain DIRECTLY from crime?! Back that up or withdraw it:mad:
See comment below.
Also, as I've posted here before, me and my wife were hijacked a few months ago. When I did the initial report the cops told me that these hijackers get paid for getting the car by syndicates and then they get to sell other stuff in the cars themselves and they sell it off pretty quickly. She said you'd be surprised what tvs and laptops you find in some shacks.

Anyway, I was called by the police last week to go identify my car. It was sold to some lady near Krugersdorp for a few thousand rands. Like R4000 or something. She would have known it was stolen, how else would you be able to buy a car worth around R90 000 for that for that cheap?

Of course I can't give you a link to try and disprove it and this is just my experience. Take it or leave it. If you have a problem with what the cop told me contact the police and ask them to prove it.

I think he worded that badly, meaning ppl in townships dont gain directly from tourism. However, if they were to do crime they see an instant benefit

What stops them 'doing tourism' and thereby gaining directly as they may in crime?
Startup capital, time, education. Lots of reasons.

We are (obviously) talking here about people who DO gain from tourism.
They are in the minority and thus have no power in this situation.

This is common knowledge, at least AFAIK.

Not so. Most people are inherently good.

Due to the trauma you suffered, I can understand that you are unable to see this at the moment, though.

I agree. But who do you think buys all the stolen goods? Just the tsotsis?

Most people are also scared and mind their business. Why would someone who ears a minimum wage salary working at a tourist spot take on armed criminals who know where they live and can bribe the cops suddenly try stop criminal activities? They won't earn more because of it. Most people just ignore it and go on with their lives.

I don't know about this particular one but there are tourists by the bus loads in Soweto. There's a nice spot there where you can enjoy a nice African cuisine (forget the name), but the place always has a bus full of tourists enjoying a fine African meal. The same for the area around the H Petersen museum, some nice eating spots too.

The place is called Vilakazi Street, in Orlando West and they have many restaurants. Madiba and Winnie's house are in same area!

Nothing. Except that crime is so much easier? It pays better, requires almost no startup money, its instant returns.....

I said people in black communities have a stronger sense of cohesion and will often hand over suspects to SAPS, i.e. they will not tolerate the criminal in their midst. Even tsotsis live somewhere and in that community, word spreads.

Again, it's a pity you lost faith in humanity.

Yeah that's the place, but Wandi's food is like whoah! man:). Must return to that scene soon.

how do you confirm/know this?
I have got an entirely different viewpoint, mostly from colleagues who live in these communities.
They mention how you can get cheap car parts etc etc. this is certainly not turning others over, in fact, its supporting it

while it's all ok to visit townships and suburbs etc it's not the people you are with or those that you are going to visit, it's that bunch of guys on the corner looking to do mischief and don't care or even know who you are that will rob, hijack and kill you.

Yeah its great place indeed. Interestingly, the most popular club in Soweto, club Ozone, is owned by a White man and I often see tourists in early morning hours. I've asked a few times if they weren't scared and the common answer is "theres' crime everywhere".

Personally, when I go out at night I know I'm taking a risk. Doesn't matter whether its Florida rd in Durban, Melville in JHB or Soweto.

Actually, it does matter. The level of risk varies from place to place.

A most peculiar story. Woolly reporting at it's best.

The man (described as a millionaire businessman) reportedly has family in ZA, it's unlikely then, that he would be unfamiliar with the nature of crime in ZA, and even more incredible that he would take his new wife to a notorious township late at night.

The couple were traveling in a sort of a tour vehicle, not a taxi, but something described as a "shuttle", a Volkswagen station wagon. The driver of the vehicle was returning from Somerset West, where they couple had supper. The UK daily mail speculates the couple decided to go to Mzoli's in Gug, that they may have got lost(!), and were hijacked by two gunmen.

If the object was to steal the vehicle, then the hijackers would have dumped all three occupants immediately. But only the driver was ordered out of the car, and the car is later abandoned, which would indicate that the thugs were not in theft mode, but in entertainment mode, that is, to take the couple on a township jive. But the husband was dropped off, unharmed, while the thugs go off with the woman. Rather an unconventional township drive.

I wonder when this one will ever get to court? I would be mildly curious to learn the real story.

i don't buy this story at all. there is something way too fishy here. what would they want to go to the township for at 11 at night? sight seeing? yeah right. my guess is that he came here for his honeymoon knowing exactly what the crime rate was like. i bet his business was not as prosperous as people are being made to believe. he probably had some life insurances out on his wife and this place was the ideal place to carry out his plan.

That is an exceptionally grim viewpoint...but the story is a little odd. I agree, A multi millionaire would be very unlikely going into townships at that time.

I do not like your innuendo.

You seem to say most people in black communities support the criminals by buying stolen goods. That is nonsense.

On that note though, are you aware of how many people OF ALL COLOURS, INCLUDING WHITE, commit insurance fraud , buy pirated DVDs, etc. ?

I had this thought when someone above started speculating about the driver...
The police will have realised this and started looking at the husband, it's SOP. Most murders happen between people who know each other.

Good heavens.

Are you suggesting he knew they would be hijacked? How excactly ? How did he know that they would not kill him too?

Are you suggesting he paid off the hijackers?

Sounds ludicrous to me.

I merely stated what i have seen in my surroundings? How this is a bad thing i have no idea?
I was pointing out that I disagree with your stance that ppl in black communities have this massive strong sense of cohesion you mentioned.
You are making me out to sound racist? And that i do not appreciate.

I asked how do you demonstrate your statement? I demonstrated mine with a recount of what i have discussed with fellow workers.
Of course i agree crime happens across all races, what i disagree with is ur statement that black ppl are more likely to report it as a community than other races.
And especially in the townships, from what I have heard, whilst there may be those who would report criminal activities, its not as common as you are making it out
