The Anni Dewani Murder Case

... the problem here is that the trouble places are being touted as tourist spots.

+1

Had an interesting experience a while back, I don't know the Cape that well, and my GF's GPS was taking us through all sorts of dodgy areas - only later discovered that she had set the thing to "Avoid Highways".

Fortunately it was during daytime - I almost stopped for "Skoonma se Snoek" on the Cape Flats, sounded interesting !

I'd have to agree. Never had an issue in most places, the problem here is that the trouble places are being touted as tourist spots.
I don't know about this particular one but there are tourists by the bus loads in Soweto. There's a nice spot there where you can enjoy a nice African cuisine (forget the name), but the place always has a bus full of tourists enjoying a fine African meal. The same for the area around the H Petersen museum, some nice eating spots too.

I see nothing wrong with tourists visiting townships... it is township people that need to realise that they cannot continue to harbour these criminals if they expect to get a piece of the foreign currency that the tourists bring. They must know these criminals and when something like this happens they must hand them over asap.

I agree, if they can redeem any kind of value the locals must hand these monsters over to the authorities, they know who they are.

I have to agree with you. Problem is that people have not learnt that one's actions have consequences!

The people stealing/robbing/killing tourists must be made to understood how stupid it is to kill the goose that lay the golden eggs. If tourism forms a large part of a country's GDP, you treat those visitors like gold!!!!

Yeah good luck with that. Those criminals bring them nice big screen tvs, laptops and cellphones for under a R1000.

There's a HUGE difference between Khayalitsha and Soweto. Khayalitsha is one of the most dangerous townships in the country. Soweto is fairly civilised and clean in comparison - it's SA's example of a functioning thriving township.

Doesn't surprise me that they were attacked in one of the most dangerous places in the middle of the night. Where was common sense???? If I was in Miami for example, I'd stay clear of area's like Highleah and Liberty. Especially at night!!!

All cities have their dodgy areas, and you should know the areas to avoid. Still sickening though. Hope they catch these bastards!

FIFA recommend on their web site that they must go there. I'm sure they got the information from SA tourism.

It often happens. If we are honest with each other, most people are peaceloving and non-violent.

In my experience, black communities have a strong sense of cohesion and they are not afraid to discipline the tsotsis amongst them.

Ever thought that maybe getting all those stolen booty is their golden eggs?
Most people living in townships don't profit(directly) from tourism. They do gain directly from the criminal activities though. Thus they'll continue to harbor and protect the criminals in their society. Unless of course the criminals target their own. Then they get all outraged and vigilantism rears its head.

MOST people gain DIRECTLY from crime?! Back that up or withdraw it:mad:

I think he worded that badly, meaning ppl in townships dont gain directly from tourism. However, if they were to do crime they see an instant benefit

What stops them 'doing tourism' and thereby gaining directly as they may in crime?

We are (obviously) talking here about people who DO gain from tourism.

Such a huge shame & sad story which has been broadcast across the UK media & will definitely be detrimental to tourism from the UK.
