The Anni Dewani Murder Case

I think she would have been safer in a Muslim country like Dubai or Malaysia. Those guys know how to look after tourists.

This is truely sad esp. since our world cup passed with no sunh disasters!

It doesn't help that Fifa recommended a drive through the townships as a good thing for tourists to do.

Yep,I also seen a SA promo video 2 years ago on a JNB inbound flight that included Soweto as a "cool" place to go checkout.

Yep, in Durban it's umlazi.

As the night falls, make your way back to near township like uMlazi and look for the nearest ‘shebeen' or a ‘tavern' where you will spend your evening.

These people should be charged.

There was a post on Reddit a while ago where this american guy talked about his upcoming vacation to SA and how he looked forward to going to the township parties. And going there with a taxi nogal. 0_o
Someone is actually actively marketing going into those places to foreigners. It's unbelievable. Luckily a few locals told the guy that its really REALLY not a good idea.

Waved down? As in flagging down a taxi for a lift? Why did the driver not put his foot on the accelerator?? If you see someone on the road holding a gun and waving you down, who in heck will stop? You take your chances and try to get out of there !

Exactly - this is suspicious !

So who is going to admit that there is a problem ? Definitely not the ANC / Government / Police !

"This was an isolated incident" - ANC.
They will never admit that crime in SA is completely out of control.

The bottom line is that the whole world knows that South Africa has a problem with violent crime, and the couple went out late at night to a dangerous area regardless. I'd normally be the first to start going off about this country, but really, they made no attempt at all to make it through their stay here alive. If they were killed at the beach it would have been a different story. Loads of countries have places to avoid at night.

I don't know, Blu, it is difficult to know how one will react in this situation. A firearm is a very frightening thing to see especially if it is being waved at you. He reacted the way he reacted and the situation escalated into a tragedy. If he had reacted differently and had escaped, we would not be having this discussion. I am sure some folks do put foot and get away. This didn't happen. Stories like this simply scare the schitt out of me as I have no idea how I would react even with a military background.

Sad.

what were you smoking when you walked through these shopping centres?

I'd have to agree. Never had an issue in most places, the problem here is that the trouble places are being touted as tourist spots.
