The Asic thread

Don't see myself dropping R100K to an eBay seller...

I always check reviews.. sometimes might seem dodgy but a lot of times they have good reviews.

There is also the that buyer protection program.

Always read the fineprint on the buyer protection program - sometimes the full amount is not covered.

As for what's available...

At that price... no thank you lol!

Yeah, those are a little ouch..

Though at current rates you should be able to pay it off in one month :crylaugh:

That's Jan 10th stock... which lands by Jan 20th hopefully... eh... All I see is D3.

Doesn't ship internationally... lol.. yes, I've checked...

To be honest, I'll actually look at getting an X10 too. With the market always just talking "Bitmain Bitmain Bitmain", one doesn't always consider the other names out there. Lower hash rate, but seems to be doing pretty damn OK at the moment too. Put some feelers out to some of the Alibaba folks to see what they come back with.

Otherwise just move to GPU mining like dj2381, but not sure about that either tbh. If you want to make the bucks, ASIC is the way to go.

You talking profitability? I'm hoping the multi-algo extends the longevity a bit.

While it is multi algo, the list of mineable coins is very small.. almost as much as the X11 algo so I reckon it's going to get flooded pretty quickly.

Just looking at the daily returns reminds me of when the D3 was first released. A lot of people got burnt buying those machines as the difficulty for x11 coins skyrocketed ( more specifically dash ).

Essentially at that purchase price, you should be good if you can get your hands on the first or second batch. After that it becomes risky.

100%

Was hoping for the Jan batch. After month one you would hit ROI and from there whatever can happen.

I thought the same thing, it might be a safer purchase but the ROI is just too long for my liking.

That and to get all GPUs running perfectly is a pain in the rear.

Just make your own frame though.. you can save lots of $$$ that way.

Sometimes you can ROI quicker than what you wait for ASIC delivery lol

Thats if lucky like mining ZCL then sell it when it booms etc.

Yeah, the wait for the ASIC has to be factored in for ROI. 3 months with Bitmain really sucks. Also, GPUs aren't as bad as they were a few months back - at least there's stock. I personally like the fact that I don't have to 'get lucky' and see consistent returns even if it's a tad boring at times.

Hows the noise with a 6 card rig GTX? Any idea how it compares to an ASIC? I know ASICS are flipping noisy, just curious about the comparison. Some of those GPUs can be noisy too.

GPUs are not that bad with noise, slightly lower than ASIC.

Problem is heat. I had 12 cards running at the office. Nearly died without aircon.

EDIT: that's with R580s not 1060s though

Oh, ASICs get hot. I have to extract directly to the ceiling void and the room is still warm. Ta for the info. It's harder to cool GPUs for that reason IMO... no way to send the hot air directly outside. I love the idea of a dedicated shed with insulation and extractor on one side / air filters on the other... all cost $$ tho.

This is the key. Don't follow the sheep and mine whats NOW most profitable. Mine something that isn't great and wait for it to pick up. Actually wish I had mined ZCL.

On the note of ROI it's not as bad as before during the shortage. Now it's like 4-6Months. A set of 1050ti's roi in 3.5months.

Extractors aren't as expensive as you think. I priced one for 6k ex which can move 44.5k m3/hr ( 26k CFM ) which is a serious amount of air flow.

I have 23 cards in the room, the cpu cooler on the old amd cpu is actually the loudest. It is bearable. Though if you get vega cards they are not bearable, they basically as loud as as ASIC, as they run near 4000 rpm on the fans to keep it cool in the summer.

I can still game in the room etc, just get sweaty lol

Yeah but 1050ti though.. lol... and of course I kid, I have two in my one PC, and mined with them before. Currently getting around R32/day with them, fyi.

Looking now, I can land GTX 1080 ti cards from Amazon at around R9500/card. Let's take four of those and call it an even R40k.
With a board, PSU, RAM, HDD, risers, etc. we're pushing R50K-R55K, and that puts it on par with locally-priced S9 ASICs.

Now, with the S9 pushing around R10K/month, and each 1080ti doing around R2300/month, the numbers start looking pretty darn comparable.

The only thing the GPU rig will have going for it, imho, is the flexibility in switching algo, which turns out, could be a big deal... (thinking x11)...
