The Audi Thread

On most cars it needs to be enabled using some tech tool that the dealers have. So even if you buy the required add-on via eBay you still need to have it enabled.

With reference to the adding-Bluetooth-audio-to-car-radio thread, if an Audi has BT that you can connect to for making phone calls, is it possible (or if not why not) to play other audio via BT from one's smartphone to the car audio?
If this is a case of you have BT in your car and it's not working for audio it's a simple case of the BT version is too old.

Audi being a VW probably has the same thing where there was an upgraded head unit option.

If so the best option then is to just buy the OEM head units that the Chinese have upgraded with more memory and Apple Carplay and the whole story.

R3500 odd last I checked. Maybe better now with the Rand.

Usually that's if the head unit was shipped with no Bluetooth at all.

Generally you won't find different versions of BT for the same head units. There are exceptions.

Exactly. For me even fitting an aux input on one car will require a tech tool to tell the head unit that aux is now an option for input. On my other car adding the USB / Bluetooth module also need some kind of dealer software to enable it.

I get why that is, the car was shipped without those feature so you don't want an option in a menu that does nothing.

Oh, i should add that a Skype call worked via the car's audio, so does that not require A2DP? I must test it again, was really surprised when that worked.

Hi all, need some advise. I'm looking at buying a 2012 Audi A5 2.0Tdi sportback multitronic, it has 110 000km on the clock but is going for a very good price from a dealer which is rare, hence my question.

How reliable are the multitronic gearboxes and what would I be looking at cost wise for the next service, I'm guessing it's at 120 000km.

Other than that the car is very clean.

stay away. well documented oil consumption issues and failure of multitronic gearboxes. i might be wrong but ask guys on http://www.audiclubsouthafrica.co.za

Don't think so.

The phone is just translating it through normal voice channels I would imagine so to the car it's one and the same really just passing microphone and headphone input along.

What happens when you try to play music? Just nothing?

Remind me what car it is and what head unit then I can check.

Yeah it's partly to do with the Canbus chatting to the menus and buttons I believe.

Also in some cases the reason it can't just be added is because the Canbus Gateway isn't up to date to support it and then that also needs to be replaced otherwise it just drains the battery and does weird stuff.

That shouldn't be such an issue on newer cars though.

So I did a bit of research and the gearboxes are known to bomb out now and again, i have tested the vehicle and all seems well from what i can see/feel (I'm a diesel mech so I hope my call is correct) but i have taken out extended warranty to cover the drivetrain and more for piece of mind.

I got the car at a steal from the dealer as they messed up on the quote so even with everything added it comes in at 15k under trade all together so I can't complain.

Only problem is the 120 000km service costs R15k because of the cambelt and added labour to strip the front end, the 135 000km costs R1.7k after that. So I will just keep money aside for that and any other future repairs I can do myself other than services.

Or don't do it at the dealership?

Cambelt on those cars is usually at 180,000km according to the manual but most mechanics just follow their own logic and replace it at 120,000km anyway.

****

Oh wait, it's the diesel. Not sure in that case.

In order not to void the extended warranty I will need to have the full service done at a approved dealership, otherwise I would just service it myself.

Better to do it early as they have a mileage and age life span, whichever comes first.

I was a few months away from having to do the belt on my s3 and the bearing on my water pump failed right outside my house, belt started rubbing on the metal cover luckily I just shut off the engine before it started to wear through and snap.

Does it absolutely have to be a brand name dealership? Aren't there any RMI ones on the list?

Yeah they do have a mileage and age lifespan...but that's kind of what I'm getting at most Audi/VW's mileage is actually 180,000 not 120,000km.

They are meant to check it at every service but many mechies still change it by default at 120,000km whether it's looking perfect or far from age or not.

Which completely up ends your maintenance costs in the longer term.
