The Bafana Bafana Thread

A 2 all draw, we stay top of the group and unbeaten, while Nigeria are knocked out. We played over 25 minutes with 10 men.

Do they teach English language in Nigerian schools? There were so many stuff ups. Supersport should have used South Africans.
It's all about business. Nigeria has larger growth potential than SA for DSTV....so no luck for us wrt commentary. The best we can hope for is an alternate audio stream in English

I have to admit I was one of those who thought Shakes was an Irvin Khoza supported lapdog (as he's admitted so himself following a previous firing) pick, but I am pleasantly surprised.

New squad:

Goalkeepers: Brilliant Khuzwayo, Jackson Mabokgwane, Dumisani Msibi.

Defenders: Siyabonga Nhlapo, Patrick Phungwayo, Mulomowandau Mathoho, Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Kwanda Mngonyama, Ayabulela Magqwaka, Thulani Hlatshwayo, Siyanda Zulu.

Midfielders: Themba Zwane, Mzikayise Mashaba, Oupa Manyisa, Vuyisile Wana, Fagrie Lakay, Jabulani Shongwe, Bongani Zungu, Asavela Mbekile.

Strikers: Siyanda Ngubo, Puleng Tlolane, David Zulu, Lerato Lamola.

Bafana play Ivory Coast in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on Sunday at Mbombela Stadium. As this match is outside the FIFA calendar only PSL players were selected. No players from SuperSport or Platinum Stars were selected, as the play the Telkom Knockout final on Saturday.

The AFCON draw is done, and Bafana is in group c, with Ghana, Algeria and Senegal. That's about as bad a draw as was possible.

So why is Serero being left out? Is it commitment issues or some gentleman agreement with Ajax?

Nothing is offical, but it looks like Shakes was unhappy the Serero didn't report to camp early. Ajax were already on winter break, and he was in SA. He didn't come to camp though. While you only have tp report 14 days before AFCON, Shakes sees itbas lack of patriotism.

Maybe I saw a report saying his club had requested he be allowed additional rest. I guess Shakes didn't think he's likely to be that committed for fear of injury - but it's a shame because he'd have been gone a short time seeing as we'd be lucky to get out of that group.

He is a great player, I hope that we can get out of our group without him.

If his club requested more holiday for him And safa agreed then shakes is full of shyte. Can't question loyalty if you tell the player he needs to get back by x date. Then others reported earlier on date y. Then when he doesn't report earlier on y you chop him?

Something else going on.

FIFA says that you have to report 14 days before the start of a tournament. AFCON starts on 17 January, so SAFA only have a claim to players from today. That's why Dean Furman only gets in today. Shakes seems upset that Serero was in SA, as Ajax are on winter break. I'm not sure if Ajax asked for rest time or if SAFA agreed to it.

From a FIFA standpoint though, none of the players had to be in camp until today. The general practice though, is that once your last club game is done, you report for duty. England is the oddity, as it has no winter break.

If he reported in time he should be included. Seems his crime is timeoff in his homeland.

Bafana win it 1-0. Not a great showing but a win none the less. Hopefully the team gels better soon. We have a hell of a group at AFCON.

Well, it's better than a draw. One can only hope they step it up in the next 2 scheduled friendlies.

Starting XI vs Gabon:

Brilliant Khuzwayo, Rivaldo Coetzee, Thulani Hlatshwayo,
Thabo Matlaba, Anele Ngcongca, Dean Furman,
Andile Jali, Oupa Manyisa, Themba Zwane, Tokelo
Rantie, Bernard Parker

Kick off is at 9pm with coverage on SABC 1.
