Couldn't find one, so I started one.

Tell me which bakkie you drive and why you chose it. Or tell me why you think bakkies are k*k. Either way, let's talk about South Africa's favourite family vehicle.

I'll start - Ford Ranger with canopy. No oil leaking (as they were once notorious for), very comfortable drive, and my wife can pack everything she needs for a weekend away.

Ford Bantam 1.3i Rocam. Daily drive for the last .... 10 years ? Fokol problems.
Had a Nissan 3.3 V6 4x4 Double Cab for about 7 years. Fokol problems, except the fuel consumption.
Traded the Nissan for a Pathfinder.

GWM p series commercial double cab.. chose it for the looks and value for money vs the other established brands on the market..

Been a year of smooth sailing so far, zero issues.. it also had a 10 percent or so price increase a month after I bought it..

The Chinese brands, especially GWM/Haval seem to have improved immensely in the last couple of years. You mention commercial double cab - is that a specific derivative? I have seen so many different LED headlight configurations, so I am not too sure what is what there. It is a good looking bakkie, and it is good to hear that they are solid.

They offer the commercial and passenger series.. the commercial is geared more for work/business use and has less bells and whistles than the passenger series, but that also makes it cheaper.. even with less bells and whistles, you still get more of those on the commercial vs the previous gen ranger at significant lower price point..

Also, did I mention I have a sunroof...

have a 2010 triton 3.2d 4*4

bought it for going offroad ..havnt been once yet

nice for throwing kark in the bin

had few issues with them though

couldnt afford a toyota so went with a triton ...toyota is atleast 100k more

My first bakkie was a Mazda BT-50. I paid extra for a diff-lock, since "you can go to Mozambique with it". I never used the diff-lock or went to Mozambique. Had quite a bit of drama with that bakkie, had the turbo, gearbox, injectors and EGR valve replaced, all under warranty, luckily.

I have a 2018 Amarok single cab sitting on 270k now and not a days **it. I will probably get the new one when this one hits 300k and you can no longer have a service plan for the vehicle.

lucky

i bought mine with 200k on the clock

the clutch went and i had to do software cos there was a pedal issue error

so spent about 30k so far with tyres

but drives nicely and has nice power

I HAD to go and look that up. I wouldn't take a sunroof on a bakkie, but must admit it is a pretty cool feature.
I actually had no idea about the sunroof until I took delivery of the bakkie and the salesman pointed out the controls for it.. when I initially did test drives, no dealer had stock of the spec level I was interested in, so had to drive the lower spec one, which obviously doesn't have a sunroof..

There are a few things I would rather they have spent the money on instead of the sunroof.. wireless android auto, vanity mirrors(don't have any for some reason)..

Also, another oddity.. the more expensive passenger series line doesn't have a rear cabin light, my cheaper commercial does.. they finally released a more expensive passenger derivative this year which includes a rear cabin light..

Whilst the Chinese are getting much better, they do still make some odd decisions..

In that case, I hope you don't have any plans to get the latest gen Amarok...
No sadly not. VW cooked the goose on that one in my opinion. Mines a 2019, only just reached 60000km. I reckon it should be good for another 10 years

Ah, the one that is now extinct and was replaced by a lifeline from Ford? :p
That's the one  I think the suits at VW made a bad choice. One of the reasons I took the VW instead of the Ford was because of the larger cabin. I wonder if the new amarok is as narrow as a ranger now

The new Amarok is 24mm narrower than the old, the Ranger is 58mm wider than the old, but the Amarok is still quite a bit wider than the Ranger, this should translate to cabin space as well.

Where's all the Nissan bakkie manne ? Or just yuppies here driving their laptops around ?
