The Bakkie Thread

Only bakkie Ive ever owned is a Land Rover Defender TD5 pickup
I still kick myself for selling it :(

2002 Land Rover Defender 110 2.5 Td5 pick-up high-volume for sale in Gauteng | Auto Mart

The new Amarok is 24mm narrower than the old, the Ranger is 58mm wider than the old, but the Amarok is still quite a bit wider than the Ranger, this should translate to cabin space as well.
I also wonder if the new amarok interior is as plastic as the ranger. It was one of the downsides of the fords. Also not a fan of the digital dashboard in both of them. I like real guages

Plastic? If you want wood, see if you can find an X-series Mercedes somewhere.

I was skeptical about the digital dash, but it is pretty customisable and awesome, I must say.

Well I don't mean wood, I mean the quality of the plastic.

Would you prefer the digital dash now that you've experienced it?

my opinions when i picked a Bakkie.
These are very versatile vehicles. Fitted with a modern canopy you amazing boot space and enough cabin room for the family. The big wheels can easily deal with bad roads and potholes. Even thou they bigger and bulky to park, taxis wont push you of the road.

Hilux over priced for aging look. There infotainment is very old. The GD6 , d4d has terribly hard suspension. Insurance is crazy high and need 2 trackers. Did not want to play the park your bakkie and see if it is still there when you back. The toyota being more reliable was true in the 80s and 90s. No difference between this and many other bakkies.

Ranger. Really good looking. the 2.2 has amazing fuel economy. Ranger do lead the way on looks and tech. The new v6 are thirsty. Also need 2 trackers and are as popular as hilux when it comes to theft. Rangers are a hit and miss. Some people have no issues with them and some people have issues from day 1.

Triton i only heard good things, never driven one so i have no opinion. Not a big fan of the styling

GWM Poer ( p series) This bakkie getting amazing reviews and probably has the most value added features of any bakkie. I think some models even come with a winch. Only complaint i hear that it is a little under powered.
Love to see how they do as they age but a great contender.

Amarock that is part ranger. Still typical german. great quality but you pay for it. Have driven one and the bakkie that drives the most like an SUV.

Isuzu Dmax not the best styling bakkie Super reliable and one of the best driving bakkies when it comes to a comfortable ride. There is a reason why the courier guy has 1000s of dmax's in there fleet. No tracker required and the insurance on these are very low compared to other brands. The engines are well known to do over a million km.

The previous gen also had a portion that was digital, together with the analog dials. Like you would feel about a TV, a laptop, a phone or anything with a screen that is software driven, I constantly remind myself about how it might give issues (that would need a mechanic to fix it). Once I get past that, yes - it is MUCH better than the old.

You mention a big issue with the trackers/insurance. For the record, I am insured with Discovery, and they require no additional tracker, their telematics device with crowdsearch or whatever is enough. Not sure if it also the case for the Toyotas.

The latest gen Isuzu has got updated looks and up to date infotainment system.. unfortunately, with those updates they have also upped the price, significantly..

There is a company who has finally got a ECU remap available for the GWM p series that gets rid of the lag people complain about..

My Father in Law bought a new Isuzu 1.9 LS in February. He drove it four about two weeks before bumping into a kudu and had to wait about another 6 weeks for it to get fixed - the joys of rural South Africa. Anyways, it is a huge update on the previous generation, but some of it was still quite primitive in my opinion. I suppose it is more bakkie and less car, if you know what I mean.

Couldn't find one, so I started one.

Tell me which bakkie you drive and why you chose it. Or tell me why you think bakkies are k*k. Either way, let's talk about South Africa's favourite family vehicle.

I'll start - Ford Ranger with canopy. No oil leaking (as they were once notorious for), very comfortable drive, and my wife can pack everything she needs for a weekend away.

Same here, Ford Ranger 2.2 with canopy. Currently on 76k km and the only issue so far is the fact that I wanted to change my insurance to FNB but they insist on having a tracker in due to theft, my current insurance is more expensive but they don't require a tracker. After hearing about a local bakkie that got stolen a few weeks back at a restaurant close by I now park only in the covered parking when I go to the mall, and avoid places without secure parking, or use my wife's little Up! for dodgy places.

My long term average is on 8.4l/100km over the last few thousand km's. Was lower but on a trip to George two weeks back I caned this thing all weekend as we left the house quite late and tried to get there before dark. Same on the way back.

i think all the new bakkies look good

some need a little "pimping"

the amarok looks very classy though

but yeah the hilux i was looking for was around the 2010 model ..i have heard the newer Gd6s are not that reliable

but the toyota holds value big time

other day a guy posted an ad ..2011 d4d 4*4 he wanted R300k+ for it ..had around 180k if i remember

that bakkies brand new in 2011 someone told me was around that price

2012 Chev Utility 1.4. Had 13000km when purchased now on 116522km. Reliable and fit for daily use.
Previous bakkie was 2006 Ford Bantam 1.3i purchased new but written off in 2013 with 84000km on odo.

Amarok V6 highline plus. Reasons for purchase:
  1. It's not a Ford
  2. Very classy
Had the same. Sold it earlier in the year. Bloody amazing bakkie that.
Waiting for a next-gen Raptor, in blue. Fsck me if I know when I will find one. And in the meantime, they are getting price increases every time you blink.

I already have about R10k accessories lying in the garage. Rubber interior mats, load bin mat, eazi-down for the tailgate, weather shields, glass screen protector, headlight trim, spotlights etc.

Also lined up the okes to make me a custom exhaust, just the tail pipes. Might do downpipes later.
Gonna do ceramic coating, ppf, smash & grab.

That thing looks hot. There's a white one standing at the local dealer, it makes the other bakkies there look like toys.

When you do find one, make sure the diff does not whine.. you would hear it at 50km/h, 80 km/h and 110km/h.. been a few reports of this from Oz.. seems to be a case of low oil, leading to excessive wear on the gears..
