The Banting/LCHF Thread

I cheated. Bought two burgers from Spar Diner .... had one now and the other is for tonight. I could not help myself. I JUST HAD TO HAVE A BURGER!!!!!!!!! :o

You could at least have had a decent burger if that was the case!
When I cheated for a buger(which I also had to have) my wife made the most over the top gourmet burger and it was well worth it.

I started eating low carb in December last year, I was moderately overweight and have shed around 13Kg and am now smack bang in the middle of my ideal BMI and find it easy to maintain my weight. I actually weigh less now than I did fresh out of high school.

When we moved house in the beginning of the month I had a lot of takeaways and carb heavy meals and thought I was going to die.

The only sugar that I still ingest mainly comes from milk based products, mostly cheese, some alcohol consumption (wine or whisky and have a craft beer as a treat once in a while, zero fizzy drinks). Usually a sweet treat involves buying 85% Lindt dark chocolate. I can't even eat normal dark chocolate any more as just tastes too sweet. Eating 85% also means I don't have to share it with my wife, hehe!

Negative aspects: this years winters feels like the chilliest I've ever experienced, LCHF is generally low on fibre and does not play nice with my digestive system. To maintain a bit of fibre I'll eat a slice of low GI whole grain bread in the mornings with breakfast, but that runs up the carb meter pretty quickly, but not so bad since I don't want to lose further weight. I generally tolerate carbs well, except french fries. My blood sugar has dropped from 5.6 to around 4.5. Early in my diet I had issues with low blood sugar, but it looks like my body has now adapted. Cholesterol levels are slightly up, which had already been high, which is a bit concerning depending on who you ask.

I feel you on the cold.. Regarding the fiber, eat more broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and cabbage.

I do eat quite a bit of those. My digestive system has been wrecked by over prescribing of antibiotics by doctors as I had been suffering from chronic sinusitis for a long period of time.

Incidentally, since I have started LCHF, I haven't fallen ill once, that is now 7 months.

add full cream yoghurt and kefir to your diet

Bought some 'grain-free toast' (Life Bake) from Dischem. It's basically crackers but bloody yummy ones ...... 0.6g carbs per and each one is a decent size.

You want a burger? Squeeze a home made stuffed patty between two large mushrooms :D

Had a bit of a fall this weekend with loadshedding and going to visit but kept it low: half a box of fries and four pieces sushi ( rainbow rolls ). And if anyone wonders about that combo, the reality was I ordered a half chicken and chips ( pizza chicken perfect, wood fire roasted hmmmmm) and the rest of the family pigged out on sushi, I couldn't resist a few pieces, especially when they over bought.

Cant wait till next week. Wife is coming back from her trip with a ton of Green and Black’s Dark chocolate

I don't have a big issue with the science behind Banting. What worries me is the constipation.
You people honestly not struggle with it?

I am constantly pro active regarding my intake. I make sure I constantly drink water throughout the day and I make sure I take in some form of fibre in the day. Examples are: almonds \ banting seed bread \ seed crackers \ other approved nuts.

I have skipped fibre for a few days without any issues. BUT, if I have a low water intake day there is serious trouble!

EDIT: Pro Tip for making things move down there: strong coffee. I have resolved many an issue with 2-3 cups of VERY strong coffee with lots of cream. Works like a charm :)

The price of low carb bread makes me sad :(

Yeah I hear you - over R5 a slice :-/

Just smashed 2 sliced of that Woolies bread with chicken mayo on. Tasted good but when I toasted the slices, everyone in the office moaned as the linseed has that typical fishy smell. It doesn't bother me so I told them to sod off and go eat some sugar!
