The Banting/LCHF Thread

Just a question, how crucial is a fat intake for banting ? Do you actually focus on ensuring there is enough fat included in the diet ?

quiet crucial, fat is where you bodies energy will come from, since you aren't feeding it sugar anymore.

you don't have eat like fat all the time, just fatty foods, like avo, bacon, cream, cheese, etc

How about a low carb granola with nuts, seeds and toasted coconut

Just beware that nuts and seeds are very energy dense. Don't eat too much of them in other words.

Add some plain full fat yogurt to that.

I love garlicy, spicy stuff. So my mince or chicken will almost always contain those.

Then avo and a salsa is always a nice addition. And of course just for some colour and crunch some crispy lettuce or coleslaw.

Sauce of choice.

So I came home and found my wife made some chicken shiz, so I thought, let me try make this taco thing.

First int he microwave, nope, didn't work, maybe didn't have it in long enough, was too soggy.

Next in the oven. A lot better, but not quite crispy, might be that I only have Gouda in the house in not Cheddar. Do you think that could be the reason? But, it worked great!

I usually buy smoked provolone slices from woolies and microwave them on a silpad for 1min then leave to cool in a cup....works perfect

they work great in the micro for me ... grate cheese, put in for 1 min maybe 2min and take out and let it
harden ... wipe off the oil btw, dont forget to put it on some baking sheets, silicone ones work great.

if you want cheese crisps leave it in for 3 to 4 min and it goes super crisp
love them

So I came home..... snip snip snip

Looks good. Yummy.

I've never tried them with Gouda to be honest. Might be why they didn't get as crispy. It is a slightly softer cheese than cheddar.

Even though I prefer the oven version, when I am pressed for time I always do them in the microwave. Never had to do longer than 90sec. But I always make sure they are thin and evenly spread (so no thick spots that may stay "melty").

But oven gets the nice browning on the edges that the microwave doesn't quite get right.

Our 3yo daughter pretty much eats 2 or 3 of these "discs" each and every night with her other food. She sort of demands them by now.

sound good :)
where do you get them from supplier?
tanx

Check out Ciscos in Fordsburg, they have the best prices on nuts and seeds that we could find. If you buy more than 3kg it's considered bulk and you get a bigger discount.

Guys - as meat prices (and food prices) skyrocket as this year progresses, my pro tip is to stick with pork as its pricing should not follow lamb/beef/chicken as much due to feeding differences.

My cheap go to is pork hock's, or eisbein. I bought 2 massive one's earlier this week for R35 each. 80minute roasting in the oven at 180 degrees and they were done. My wife and I couldn't finish one. The second one gave us topping for our next night's homemade pizza and meat for work lunches - all for R70 and some electricity.

It is on our menu at least every second week or sooner. They are full of fat and perfect for LCHF

I use LCHF as a big saving tool - I spend WAAY less money in a month when on LCHF as meat goes so much further. Cheese is bought in bulk when on special and keeps in the fridge for many weeks. Free-range eggs also in bulk. I save at least R2k a month on LCHF versus high carb and sugar diet.

Yeah, pork is my go to meat. Buy a few kilos of pork shank, throw it in the slow cooker for a few hours and I'm sorted for the next couple of days. Same with potjiekos beef cuts when it's on special.

How does one know if you are eating too much protein?

I only saw this thread now, gone through the first 8 pages or so. Haven't seen your question answered, I think your pee will look A colour similar to apple and will also smell like ammonium, read this in a bodybuilding magazine years ago.
