The Banting/LCHF Thread

Apoc is right on the money.

It's easy when you start at 3pm, end at 10pm, and then off to bed. Never had any cravings in the morning. In fact I'm finding it really easy to completely fast the next day.... I'm not remotely interested in food after the binge.

Edit: I don't work out.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve been on keto for over 3 years now.
Lost 11kg from 83 to 72kg and it’s stable.

My issue is that I have reached a stage that I now have a normal cappuccino in the morning and don’t eat throughout the day. Just have water throughout the day.

I only eat a low carb meal (not necessary high fat) at supper time.

Some days I cheat and have an ice cream.

Is this healthy that I’m not eating anything high fat the whole day ?

I bought those cheese nibbles today and they are very lekker to snack on in the car if you get hungry.

You just described my typical day/eating habits (without the icecream)... so curios to hear what the internet has to say.

Nice to see Woolies has that as an option. I know food lovers stocks an imported Italian brand made from Parmesan, they are more expensive for a smaller packet. Will definitely try these out sometime

I've kinda gone keto and cut out all heavy carb foods (bread, sweets, chips ,rice , potatoes etc.) for probably 4 weeks now. Earlier tonight I had some potato but jeepers my tummy is feeling blegh now... I'm guessing my body has adapted and it's it not used to it anymore?

You will definitely feel it. I had a few fries for the first time after two years a while back, felt totally awful rest of the day.

I've been keto for about 4 years now come March. Daily routine is still :

1 x Shake in 750ml Water ( about double\triple the recomended liquid content ) for Breakfast
Black coffee throughout the day ( no sugar, milk etc )
Lunch is a salad ( today was lettuce , tommoato, bits of feta and about two slices of ham cut up )
Supper is my main low carb meal , for example last night was Sheppards Pie where the mash substitute was cabbage smothered in cheeses etc wrapped around the mince

The basic tennants of keto that I follow are:

1. Restrict carbs to < 25g net
2. Ensure you get your protein macro for the day
3. Eat fat to curb cravings.

High fat consumption is NOT a necessity on Keto, the carb restriction is. High fat foods tend to be low carb in nature, thats why its encouraged but the main thing you HAVE to ensure, is that you get your protein ( in whatever form ).

Regarding cheating etc, as the old saying goes, if you can fit it in your macros, go for it. I have the odd bit of icecream ( softserve is great ) or the custard zero but compensate for it in other areas. Obviously watch/avoid things like toppings, dips etc. but again, it takes 24 hours to get back into ketosis and depending on what you consume, you probably won't drop out if you go a little bit over at odd points. Listen to your body, it will tell you. I know my tastebuds and food interpretation is a lot more sensitive now, it knows exactly when I deviate.

Hi Tron,

I have been keto for 22 months now, and I have found that I am now fat adapted. I currently IF, so basically just two meals a day, sometimes one meal a day.

I have found that after I had a keto-esque meal, I can have a normal dessert of about 25gb of carbs of which around 20g is sugar as well as a cling peach. The next day I just IF and only eat at 1pm - 2pm, and also have a dessert or a fruit. And so far, I have not put on anything and my weight has been stable but I have continued to lose fat albeit very slowly. But I am happy with that. I feel like once you are fat adapted, you can take in more carbs on average but it wont stop you from burning fat, unless you persist to eat high carbs for an extended period then you will lose your fat adaptation. Ie you can be kicked out of ketosis but still be fat adapted. To get back into ketosis is childs play once you fat adapted.

In your case, if you don't eat much fat but you keep your carbs keto low, you will be burning what fat that you have on your body. What are your energy levels? Do you feel unhealthy? If you get some fat from you evening meal, it must be enough if you feel satiated. Do you feel hungry? Are you sedentary? perhaps your daily calorie requirement has dropped to the extent such that what you eat for your only meal of the day contains enough fat to maintain your body weight.

What you use for a spaghetti substitute?

I used the baked egg/cream cheese noodle replacement in spaghetti bolognaise tonight. Was OK. Not great but OK..

Believe it or not, thats shredded cabbage covered in cheese and low carb tomato sauce. Meatballs are homemade from mince, no flour. It looks like a lot but its mostly cabbage.

Cool... I can do cabbage. I want to get myself I spiraliser and test some veggie substitutes.

Threw together a chicken casserole tht I think will become a firm favourite! I didn't take pictures but will definitely do so next time.

Ingredients(all rough amounts):
  • 1/2 cup double cream yogurt
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 table spoons Checkers simple truth Chipotle sauce
  • teaspoon of garlic
  • 1 cup chicken stock ( I use Ina Paarman, as it has the least carbs)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • chicken pieces
  • spinach( as much as you think you need)
  • salt and pepper to taste
Method
  • turn the oven on to 180
  • Mix all ingredients besides the chicken and spinach together
  • brown your chicken pieces
  • lay the spinach at the bottom of a casserole dish
  • place the browned chicken on top
  • pour over the sauce
  • put in the oven for around 45 minutes.
Enjoy!

Had Pauls Home made ice cream last night with Xylotol. Not sure what the nutritional facts are but oh my it was good. 10/10 would recommend
