The Battery Thread (Solar / Inverter)

I've had a cheapie 3KVA 72V UPS ( AEC st2100) powering my office PCs for the last 4 years. It had 6 102 Ah batteries connected in series and it worked 100% for 2.5 hour loadshedding periods.
Its starting to fail now (only lasts an hour) and I'd like to replace either the batteries or both the batteries and UPS.

If I buy 6 of those omnipower 120aH gel/AGM batteries would I need a new UPS to correctly charge them? If so can anyone reccomend one?

Alternatively could I get a 12V 3kVa UPS and connect the batteries in parallel as needed for example?
Highly unlikely that you would get a 12V, 3kva. It's a choice between replacing the 6 batteries with the same type or starting afresh with a new 24V inverter and batteries.
 
Oops. Ok my bad. Typed that out in a hurry. So scrap the 12V UPS idea. Would my current UPS charge the Omni power batteries correctly or would I need a new one?
It won't cope unfortunately, the charger is too small. You need a proper inverter for the big batteries.
 
I have skimmed through the several very informative threads on "load shedding solutions" and apologise as I am sure the answers are there, they just need consolidating. But can I ask:

I only need about 1 000W of power (2 computer screens, router and LED light). Do I buy a simple system (Mecer etc) which is quite expensive to run, charging quite inefficiently (75%) from the grid and needing battery replacement say after 2 years.

or go for the longer haul, Lithium-ion batteries, a few solar panels and maybe even a hybrid system and inverter.

For the first option, I can pick one. For the second some advice maybe. Is it worth it? What do I need, hybrid: inverter obviously ($$) but also a solar controller and battery charger? or does someone like Victron offer a one box solution?
 
There was a post somewhere about Probe batteries being only automotive. This is not correct.
Probe sources and provides for many products and all sorts of batteries.

For the second option you have a lot of different options. It really depends on budget.
On one hand you can go Victron but you need a few components to make up the system, you could also get an all-in-one solution like a Goodwe which would be cheaper.
The set and forget options like the Alpha Smile5 ESS are fantastic but you would be looking at around R150k without installation for the ESS+Solar side.
 
Because there's just too many peasants in this thread, it's like suggesting a BMW G20 3 series in a thread where people are talking about Kwids and Datsun Gos.
Its a pity about the shipping regulations around batteries and the lack of older electric cars in SA.
In most countries you can pick up second life Li-x batteries for around $100/kw and sometimes a fair bit cheaper by using second hand EV batteries.
Heck if we could get reasonably priced 18650/21700 cells here it would be simple to add a BMS and build a pack based on that but even those cells are overpriced.

How does that work, most of us have 24v inverters. Can you connect a 48v battery?!

No, you have to select the right battery for the inverter you have and what is more, you need to make sure the inverter is compatible with Li batteries.
As already posted somewhere, typically up to about 2KVA is 12V, above that up to 3KVA is 24V and above that is 48V.

Most of the 48V lithium batteries are for 5kva units, they do come with a caveat though on the amount of power the can supply from a single battery unit.
Victron will void the warranty if you have a single 48V unit connected to their 3kva+ units as it puts a pretty big strain on it when a large load starts pulling.
Its different with AGM/LA though because you need to connect a few together to get up to 48V so it would satisfy the amp draw.

R3k a battery is the aim.
105ah and upwards would be ideal. If online store, shipping must be included. (That last part usually kills the price )

We dont seem to have Ecco batteries locally. Probe extreme deep cycle i did find. But if its my last option then it's Probe batteries for a start.

Takelot seems to be empty when it comes to batteries. Only stock is those Goldshines 150ah that a few on this forum are a bit, stay away'ish :D

This greatly depends on how much you are willing to spend and how long you can suffer load-shedding.

I need to power a computer, some phone-charging if needed and my cctv cameras and nvr, and have asked myself: "Do I spend R10-14k on a mecer-agm-battery system now that will be sufficient for the next 2-5 years? Or do I save a bit and spend R40-50K on a proper inverter-charger-li-on-system that will last me 10-15 years?".

And it really depends on what you can live with. If you have a family that's starting to become really irritated of having to spend another night in the dark, then the R40K solution might be worth while to save up for.

Also, the R10k solution is not very expandable, and you can't easily add alot of solar to it, where as the R40k one you can expand and grow as you have funds available, without having to chuck out the current system.

In the end, I'd say: Look at your finances, look at your level of discomfort and weigh the pros and cons of each system before buying.

Batteriesonline have Deltec 105Ah in stock for R2800. I assume it's this type:

Which company has Probe extreme deep cycle in stock and for how much?

A local tractor shop in George haha.
They have a few 110ah probe batterries.. some guys say these are decent batteries. But i cant find their cycle life
