The best and worst Internet providers

Iburst and Sentech at the bottom. I didnt vote in this, but it looks spot on.

Mweb didn't do to badly, just behind Neotel and IS.

Those top three cell company's is a bit weird, weren't there alot of complaints about cellc?

To be seriously honest here...

I never liked MWEB. But then we got ADSL at the office from them. And I was suitably impressed....:) The service was MEGAMILES ahead of that from iBurps, Telskam or any other ISP including Vodacom. And get this- the line isn't SHAPED TO DEATH and they were quite accomodating of me and my somewhat unusual routing requests.

I agree there on Mweb, when we upgraded from Mweb 2gb cap to the allinclusive 3gb option. It was done without making a single phone, except if a fax counts as a phonecall.
Just Faxed and e-mailed the froms and it was done in 5 days, also sorted everything with telkom and they even say if telkom phones you, you should just ignore it-You work through them.
Even got the free Billion 7401VGP-Mweb router, although it's locked to mweb and you normally only get it with a contract, as far as i know i didn't sign any contract and the option i chose is the month2month option.

Can't even notice the ADSL shaping, ftp works @ the same speed as HTTP and e-mail.+- 50KB , 400Kbits /sec

Same here.... they did ours in 2-3 working days- they actually put pressure on me to give them a time and date for installation of their router.

How can you publish data based upon 200 votes?
tech savvy my ass :)
We have more than a million broadband users...this only accounts for 0.0002 % of the population, what a laugh....

How big a survey do you suggest? What percentage of the population is needed to make a survey valuable? And before you answer – how about a survey about a general issue in China? :)

As for tech-savvy consumers: I don’t think there is much doubt that people frequenting this website is far more informed about Internet related issues than the general population. Do you have proof to the contrary?

200 is a little small though.

Yep. I agree. 200 is a no go. I don't disagree with the results, BUT why was it not open to all and everyone that is a member of this forum? That would have made the results a lot more convincing.

It depends on the accuracy you want to achieve. In this survey the Confidence Interval would have been +-6.93, but it is already skewed by the fact that it is not typical of the population as the users are more tech-savvy than the rest of the population. I think it is certainly accurate enough for what we wanted to achieve (give an overview of what our users think of ISPs).

Also: The margin of error in a sample = 1 divided by the square root of the number of people in the sample. It therefore depends on how accurate you want to be. A nice summary here: http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas/Soc_participants.shtml

It was indeed open to all: We posted a thread asking for people to complete the survey and did a forum wide announcement. We in fact gave out a few prizes to encourage participation.

To all those extolling the virtues of M-Web's service and product offering, a little cautionary word: don't trust them as far as you can throw them.

While they may be better than Telkom and iBurst, and I do not disagree that they can accommodating, and sometimes may actually be able to help... But behind the scenes, they blatantly refuse to protect the rights of web users as per the ISPA membership rules, and outright refuse to comply with 2x ISPA court rulings which compel them to take reasonable action against abuse on their networks.

They may appear to be great, but they are not to be trusted.

Where's Verizon ?

The full results are as follows:

1. Vodacom (7.1)
2. MTN (6.8)
3. Internet Solutions (6.5)
4. Neotel (6.0)
5. MWeb (5.3)
6. Vox Telecom (5.2)
7. Cell C (4.3)
8. Telkom (4.3)
9. iBurst (3.3)
10. Sentech (2.9)

I dont see any mention of Verizon ? are they not a 1st tier ISP ? Howcome they didnt feature ?

I agree that 200 is way too small to be meaningful.
Also, how did Neotel score so high with so few subscribers?
Even just judging by the posts on the Neotel subforum, one would assume they would rate lower than Telkom.

How can you compare 200 subscriber base to a base with over 10 000+ users? Also I do not believe that every single Neotel user posted/replied to the survey. Obviously the more people you have, the higher the chances are of clients being unhappy.
