The Bodybuilders Thread: Circuit II

I train alone - and manage to push hard on everything except barbell bench press - I've failed once and had to roll the bar off of me and that's not too much fun.
That special feeling when you have the bar hovering like 10cm above your chest and you must decide whether to bail or worse deciding if you have another one in you with your arms straight and locked.

Yip me too.... and my boss was on the bench next to me! :o

Does anyone use the Smith machine to go heavy than they can manage on a free bar? I am seriously considering it.....:erm:
Although the one at our gym doesnt run perfectly perpendicular to the ground. It has a bit of a slant...

I hate the smith machine.

That and the 2 in the VA I go to are always busy.

anybody heading over to arnold classic at sandton convention?
please post here if you find anything worth going for...deals, steals etc.

This was my view for this morning's workout.

Did an extra set on every exercise so that I can stay longer. Gotta love South Africa.

How is that working for you?

Pretty good actually. i am trying to hit 6g of Beta-alanine and 4g of Betaine pre-workout. I couldnt get it in other pwo's without an insane amount caffeine.
So now I use 2 scoops of Vaso-NO3 and i add in 2 caffeine caps(200mg), creatine and 3 beta alanine caps.

Highlight of my day :D

Also had a good squad session in now.

I was crawling out of there by my lips

Well a couple of weeks ago I thought I'd take a short cut (to save money) and buy the whey powder from dischem in the nutrition section - Not easy to get down at all. I found it to be salty and had a crystallized texture to it once I mixed it up in a smoothie. Anyways, gone back to the Evox whey protein advanced. Bonus here is no salty aftertaste and the chocolate is great for a smoothie and the strawberry cheesecake flavour is great with milk or water. Anyone tried the whey from Dischem?

Exactly the same experience here.

Is it flavoured? You could always try and add some cocoa powder.

Hey guys,

So i thought this would be the appropriate thread to ask for advice. I am about to purchase a set of this as i need to do some strength training to complement running (and i can get these cheap)
http://www.liangseng.com/product_detail.asp?ItemSID=27159&CatSID=484

Now i am a beginner to weights so i'm just wondering if you guys have any programs to point me in the right direction. Note i don't have a bench. I have googled but there are 100000 bazillion of them, should i just pick one? Main focus would be to lose weight and obviously build strength, full body. Unfortunately i can't afford gym membership here so this will have to do.

Surely for that kind of money you could get a years membership?

Sorry but from experience most people don't successfully train at home. Best advise would be get a training buddy.

Watch YouTube videos of trainers that know what they doing. I follow lexfitness. Good nutrition and technique.

I do home gym quite successfully. I have dumbells and a bench.

Some tips from me:
Buy rubber hex dumbbells if you can, not adjustable dumbbells. They are more expensive, but worth it. The set of adjustable dumbbells that I bought always felt cheap, and the spinlocks frequently came loose. Hex dumbbells don't need to be reconfigured and in general are built to a higher standard of quality. The disadvantage with them is that you can't adjust them to a precise weight, such as 17.5kg. You would have to choose between 15kg and 20kg in that case.

Buy a bench. A bench greatly expands the number of exercises that you can do, and ensures that you can do those exercises properly. It's worth it.

Don't bother trying to lose weight and build muscle if your diet is shoddy. If you eat badly, it won't matter what exercises you do, you won't see results. My suggestions - more veggies than you think you need to eat, and make sure those veggies are of a variety of veggies and not a single colour. Stop adding sugar to coffee, stop drinking any soft drinks, and stop eating bread and breakfast cereal. Replace them with water, unsweetened coffee, plaint full fat yogurt, nuts, seeds and meat. And veggies as previously mentioned.

Go on a 5-10km walk twice a week, and a 5km run as fast as you can once per week.

Also decent YouTube advice.

As for workouts, find a program written by someone else knowledgeable. Don't just think you can pick your own set of exercises that you feel like doing - there is some science to it.

Watch youtube videos, but actually I'd get a personal trainer in for one or two sessions to help with form. You might not notice all of the correct form elements just from watching a video.
