but when I use the standing calf raising machine it feels like I am squashing the front gel cushioning of the shoe.


I do that bare feet. You won't get full movement and development using a shoe doing calf raises.

Chuck Taylors are, apparently, the best shoes for weightlifting. They have flat soles made of hard rubber, which don't "absorb" the weight you're lifting/squatting. Anything with gel/shox/springs(!) apparently can do more harm than good (actually unbalance you, which can lead to injuries). They're excellent for running, sure, but for a body movement where your feet need to remain planted (squat, deadlift, overhead press), you need flat shoes.

Yeah those are pretty hardcore! Question: how do you squat with your ankles locked like that?

I'm not really looking to do Olympic Weight-lifting.

Was just wondering if cross-trainers wouldn't perhaps be a better choice to wear to the gym.

It's not just Olympic style lifts. Any sort of compound lifts need a good platform. If you're just going to be using machines and doing dumbell work, then I guess trainers are ok?

I manage, if I go for squads then I loosen the shoe then I have a good range of movement. Regarding calf raises I do those bare foot.

They are not bad I mean any decent shoe in particular will work.

Personally I have those badboys for lifting and then a separate "runner" style shoe (paar lekka Tekke ) for cardio type stuff.

Since running and Sprints with em' caterpillars is a no no

Vibram Fivefingers are great for working out - especially as they allow you to spread your toes properly and and distribute the weight. They're also flat on the floor.

Question for anyone here re. resistance bands. Any brands you liked/didn't like? At Dischem they've got a Nike brand band (probably like this) and Takealot there's a Mens Health band on special but they look ****ty and the reviews on Amazon and elsewhere make them seem cheap and difficult to adjust.

Don't want to buy something cheap that's gonna break after 2 months. Any suggestions?

5 cases of beer, plenty braai's and dessert every evening and only put on 500g.

2x kids that need attention 24/7 kept me slim as we where out and about every day from 5:30am till sunset.


Started new year gymming on friday with light all body routine, saturday was feeling doms but managed a chest/tricep routine.
Sunday rested - today hoping for decent deadlift, pull-up and bicep routine.

Left shoulder still stuffed thinking that'll take another 2 months to fix itself so no more bench press or overhead lifts for a good while.
Time to get diet in order as well.

First day ever of 5x5 or first day revisiting 5x5? If it's the former then you're doing it wrong...

Former. Also, the first time ever using a squat rack (and doing compound exercises) - always been wary of free weights, as I've had ankle surgery (stuck to leg press, extensions, etc). I understand now why people rave about squats so much! That **** is hard! But it feels good, though. I spent a lot of time (during warm up) just trying to get the movement right, and trying to work on proper form.

To my understanding, you shouldn't have anything left in the tank after a 5x5 session, anyway. So am I really doing something wrong?

My understanding of 5x5 is to start really light and ease into it. Because you are adding weight every next session.

So if you went about 85% of 1RM on your first session you will definitely not be adding more weight every session. Physically impossible.
