There's no way to target fat loss is there?

I'm skinny but my abs don't show as much as I would like them too. I'm scared if I eat less I will get even skinnier as I actually want to gain weight to look bigger, but at the same time I want to cut body fat.

I guess what I'm wanting is to gain muscle mass by exercising and eating while still looking ripped. Is that possible? Is it just a lot of cardio as well as muscle?

I agree. Nothing beats compounds.

Broke the rules on Saturday and instead of starting with Barbell or Dumbell press, instead did 5x sets of 8-10reps on Pec Dec.
Afterwards went into my pressing routine, I could feel pec muscle contraction way better and my pecs where exhausted after presses that I didnt even get around to flyes.
It's Monday and I can still feel it.

what you want is body recycling if I recall, i.e burning fat to build muscle, fine line to get that down the last few kilo's, your diet will need to be perfect and training like a beast. frankly ratehr just bulk then cut.

Do you mean carb cycling? Although I agree bulk/cut is probably easier.

Your first bulk will probably be a long one though as cutting is pointless unless you actually have muscle to cut - which takes a while

D3x is not wrong but to answer your question you can't localise fat burning (the only way is liposuction)

You should just burn the fat, go on a cut or try out keto, my friends are looking pretty good after 6months of keto. I cba to diet like that.

I have to question the relevance of something like keto - granted it works and is popular, but why go through the mission - why not find your tdee - 500 kcal deficit + cardio - Voila-

I get nervy with cutting things out - I ruined myself for a while like that

Nr1. Keto would be quicker
Nr2. Cutting to much calories and your body will breakdown muscle. with keto, you're still getting sufficient protein, food instake

Keto is also one of the few diets with sound scientific backing. It just adds another layer ontop of the normal carbs in < carbs out diet. not only are you at a deficit but your body is burning more fat than "normal"

Keto is also cool :) BILTONG FTW!
Don't forget that burning fat is easier as you build more muscle. Sometimes you have to put on a little to be more efficient at cutting... p90x and insanity are two programs good for cutting. HIT + cardio. Insanity if you don't want to have to buy equipment.

Thanks WoDoNant? but I am not looking to lose weight, I've already dropped recently after substantially increasing calorie intake [goddam accidental starvation] and trying to clean bulk now

Ooops - sorry - I thought we were still helping pooky out from the page before :)
I agree DrewChan, I'd only do Keto if I was trying to lose something considerable, it's (low carbs) not the nicest condition to approach the gym in... I'd much rather have some low GI in my system by then.

oh wait maybe I missed something :D if that was for pooky then 100% if he wants to go the keto route - I'm just seeing great results going my way but to each their own

Talking about all that I'd better get going with my SS - fear dem squats

Yeah, burning fat is a funny thing. Not everyone burns it the same way. I'm just enjoying the challenge of doing something new in the gym now. It's way more fun if it's (one of) your hobbies.

Agree completely if you overly obsess about it - you micro analyze everything - and burn out - at least thats what has happened to me in the past

Yeah - it's a long term commitment so best to make exercise your friend. Short cuts just disappoint mostly.
Was reading up on GOMAD... that sounds a bit risky, but perhaps it's not? Certainly plenty of fluid going in with your nutrients, so that can't be bad, but I guess it depends on what else is in your milk that you're not aware of... I imagine it must give you the 5#1t5 tho.

no not carb cycling, body recycling, it is changing your body's composition, i.e. using fat to build muscle

Looks like thats the basis of keto - you decrease carbs to almost nothing increasing fat intake in order to allow your body to utilise this as a fuel - fat then become your bodies "preferred" source of fuel.

All that being said there is no 1 right path - people need to do what works for them - personally I can't be bothered to keep my carbs that low and it would be a pain to maintain.

I'm going to keep making mistakes until eventually... I hit my balance
