The Droid TV thread

@Flippy_r_1st: I got my DroidTV on Friday last week and I am using both the Netflix and Hulu Plus apps that are bundled with the unit. All that you need to do is connect the DroidTV to your TV via either an HDMI cable or the RCA cable (both of which are included with the DroidTV), plug in the PSU (also included) and turn it on. You should find both the Netflix and Hulu Plus apps installed in the correct directory. You just need to enter your account details and you are ready to start watching immediatey. It really is the simplest setup of Netflix and Hulu Plus that I've seen on any device.

Hi Guys

Looking at getting a Roku 3 but need a channel that show the F1 which is difficult on a US roku from what I can find.

Thanks

I use to use netflix and hulu but I found there is no point of paying for a service if all the paid stuff is there for free to watch. if you want F1 get the Motor Sports Replays addon and you should be sorted with F1, motogp and sbk.

The quality of these are pretty great and in FHD.

But still your choice just my 2c worth.

The Droidtv is awsome and if you need help ask avsupply. he is here on the forum.

I also have an apk file that he sent me for sports, if you want it drop me an pm and I can mail it to you.

I'm trying this sport app:

Just ignore the need to update, it works fine without it. My Telkom uncapped account isn't the best for streaming so I'm keen to see how it works on other accounts. It has some good channels including ITV4 and Skysports 1-3.

Just tried this app, some of the streams work fine - quality is same as most other live sport streaming sites like wiziwig, etc. None of the HD streams worked at all. Navigation is a bit of a chore as everything is just in one huge list.

I doubt a 384Kbps account would struggle with any of these streams as they're all very low bitrate from what I can tell so far.

My 4Mbps line struggled. I tested ITV, and Sky... that said, I use Telkom uncapped so that could be the issue.

Hi all

I purchased my droidtv box from AV SUPPLY a good few weeks ago and have been quite happy with it. I have on occasion experienced a problem where the unit will just stop playing a movie. The TV just has a black screen and there is no response when pressing any of the buttons on the remote. The only button that does work though, is the power button, in which case I can switch the unit off and on again. Thereafter it will work fine again. Has anyone experience such an issue? Any input will be appreciated.

Hi Megandroid

Does it only happen when using a specific media player?

Thanks

@avsupply can you maybe send me that apk as it does not want to download or is it the one you emailed to me?

Hi AVSupply

I'm just using the standard media player which is MoviePlayer under Local Apps. I have also noticed that it might only be when watching DVD movies (VOB files) and it switches from one VOB file to the next. After restarting the media player and the movie, I fast forward to where I last watched and it then successfully switches to the next VOB file. This does happen intermittently though.

Interesting - I don't watch VOBs much so I haven't had this experience. I usually convert them to AVI since it's easier to store.

The technical term for this is vob file seamless playback (gapless playback). I think that the chipset has to support this feature. Usually the player just returns to the launch menu but it could result in something more catastrophic such as a crash. Try playing the same files using XBMC because this might handle the situation differently. I know that the current Realtek media processors (RTD1185, RTD1186 etc.) advertise this as a feature. There are many discussions about this issue on the Mede8er, WD forums etc. Are you streaming directly via a USB port or from a wired/wireless network? If you are using a USB powered hard drive you could try from a flash drive in case there is a small power surge as the hard drive heads move over to the new file which might be causing the crash but this is probably unlikely.

The problem is that the issue happens very intermittently so it is very difficult to monitor. Most times it plays fine and I am not even sure that it is only VOB files that are affected. I will have to monitor more closely but I appreciate the input. I must let the kids know that if it does happen they must let know so that I can check which format movie they were watching. Also the hard drive is an external 2.5" drive that is attached and powered by the USB port.

Aah... does it have external power option at least? It's definitely worth having it externally powered. That could be your issue.

It's one of those Toshiba external 2.5" drives and unfortunately it does not have and external power port. It can only get power via the USB port so it could well be power related although, I have used this drive on a different mediaplayer for quite a while with no issues. At this stage I must say that the issue is more an irritation than anything else as it does not happen very often.

@Magandroid: I'm hoping that I can use 64GB flash drives exclusively to watch downloaded material on the DroidTV. The portable hard drives need a lot of power which increases the thermal dissipation of the SoC by several Watts i.e. 2~5W while the powered 3.5" drives are quite large. I see that AVS has a dual USB hard drive power cable that might be worth trying if you are close by.

Let us know if you manage to determine the actual cause.
