You can get it at builders for R200/kg...
Don’t waste your time with this. Opening and closing the filter all the time. It’s impossible to clean these blocks properly.
Rather go for glass media, replace all the seals etc and be done with it. The glass media filters finer particles and backwashes in less time. The pump runs stronger too as there is less media needed than sand.

Was just putting it out there because the discussion was about that. I still run sand. Cleaning it doesn't bother me, the pool guy will do it...

Do you have a specific product you could recommend? I will probably replace the filter media next weekend but would like to check this glass media out first.

All vanities are po3s expensive these days... redoing my bathroom, and the vanity (without basin or top) was R5k near as damnit.

Ours set us back R12k for a 1.2 x 0.6. Admittedly they used solid wood and had shaker doors painted but still.

Didn’t feel like value for money at all.

Pools:

Post storms de green:

Am I really on the hook for 2x shockers and a whole bottle of algaecide every time we get a few days of rain? Realised that my greening was my floaters being finished, but that max was only for a day. I need 2 big ones for my pool. Pump generally running daily.

Also do the bubble heating mats help with algae ?

Currently have the aqua-net removable fence which I thought would be perfect for summer but obviously does nothing for evaporation and heating. Even during the heat wave I found the pool to be colder than comfortable which explains why the previous owner had a heat exchanger pool heater (doesn’t work basically scrap atm).

Gutters:

So found checked marketplace and found a guy, then found a company advertising a special on the same industrial gutters. Company seemed solid, and came in @ 60% of the guy from marketplace. No brainier I thought. Paid the deposit, and they came in 2 weeks later with a professional looking unit (New Ranger as the company vehicle, and a stack of guys to do the work).

Took about a week and a half and they were 80% there - so I thought. We had some issues with loadshedding and the electrician working when they arrived (they didn’t check schedules and didn’t ask on the other days they came). They then went silent, we still had a lot to do on site and it was winter so I thought no biggie I’ll call them as we got closer to the rains.

Sent a WhatsApp a few weeks ago to the guy who’d been communicating with me relating that we were ready.

He responds that he is no longer with the company. Hmmm.
I then send an email to the trail of people (3) copied when I was communicating when I booked and paid the deposit, explaining where I was in the process and all but one emails bounce back.

At thAt point I try their website and it’s offline, hellopeter shows up and a myriad of posts detailing how work was sub par and people who had paid deposits and had nobody showing up. Some of these were from months before my work started. So got off relatively well.

TL;DR I need someone to finish the job, at this point it’s fairly basic but noticed even the corners they finished leak.

Any recommendations?

Side note: the company is currently running a special for the same gutters, but given I didn’t get a response out of them, and what I saw them deliver they can get stuffed. Also they left a lot of material on site, including tape measures and differently coloured material I don’t need so I reckon I got in just before they went bust.

Let's chat about Roof Paint

Has anyone had this "new" rubber roof paint painted/sprayed on their roof?
My main concern is what happens in say 5yrs when it starts to lift does one just do the same or is there a nightmare awaiting in having to remove the old "rubber" before redoing?

If this is in Gauteng, then we were duped by same company. It was 6-7 years ago and don't remember the name off-hand but MO sounds familiar. Do they have a small likable guy who visited you for marketing/sales and later on a heavy built guy who comes on this ranger bakkie ?

Bubble mats work well in that they keep the light out of the pool, which hinders algae growth. They also stop the sunlight from depleting your chlorine, which means less stabiliser. You need to be careful of chlorine lock, as your floaters could be contributing to that. I’d go for bubble mat, non stabilised floaters and your shockers will kill the algae. Make sure your chemistry is right too and you might what to up the ph initially

If you're using that many chemicals its probably in your interest to change to a salt water pool and/ or get a chlorinator. I changed to a salt water pool and I have not struggled with green pools after rain since. My next step when finances allow is to get a decent chlorinator and then I should be using minimal chemicals in my pool. And salt is cheap.

Yeah, salt is a game changer for sure. Also you don’t get chalk build up from granular chlorine. Mine is minimal effort; every two weeks de-calcify the electrode and every 6 months dump 50kg salt in. The water feels great.

Do you manually de-calcify the electrode? The one I'm looking at has an automatic de-calcify mode where you basically just check the electrode every six months or something.
How long do you run your pump. I'm currently running it for about 5 hours a day but they tell me the chlorinator needs at least 8.

I had my automatic unit converted to manual. The lifespan of the automatic ones is short due to the reversing of the polarity process. My pool tech did the conversion (can give you his shop name if you're CT-based; he's the best). Yes, so I manually do it, just use 1:10 acid/water mix in a half cut coke bottle. Super simple, screw it off and leave it for 5 minutes. All done. Pump-wise I run for about 3 hours a day in summer. Winter around 1 hour a day. Your chlorinator needs to be showing around 75% at middle setting, so you know your pool has enough salt. Sometimes I add an unstabilised floater to the pool if my chlorine levels are lower than I'd like I.E. summertime when the sun's beating and the cover is off all the time.
(I use unstabilised only bc the previous owner of this house had dumped so much chlorine into the pool bc they never decalcified the electrode that the cyanuric acid level were off the charts, finally get them normal again this rainy season with pump outs etc - big ball ache that, chlorine lock is not something you want for your pool)

Ok, thats good to know. I didn't know the automatic ones goes through electrodes.
3 hours a day? How big is your pool?

Yeah, I'm in Jhb.

Won't mention the company name, but I will post 2 pictures without context which you can interpret in whatever way you feel.

100k. How long is a piece of string though, depends on your pump size etc. find the right pump time by measuring your chlorine levels over time. When salt is maintained correctly you pump more when it drops, less when it’s too high. Work out the median.

Anyone have an idea how long unopened exterior paint can be stored for ?
