The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

Thanks for the feedback Azimuth. Yeah the LPDA-0020 is the alternative I am looking at.

I am aware of the extra effort required to set up the LPDA0092 but sure I will manage or get some help.

I have checked Telkom Mobiles site for LTE coverage and my area is covered even though a option to select PE is not available. Still need to verify this today while im gathering facts. Otherwise I will just use 3g before it is rolled out.

There is a MTN tower about 2 to 2.5km away from my place and believe Telkom Mobile uses their towers for their signal, please correct me if I am wrong.

I fear they may be trees possible in the direct line if sight of the tower how would this affect signal and would it affect antenna choice?

PE should have decent coverage. Some of the highest LTE speeds in the country are from PE! (MTN and Telkom normally correlate)

2-2.5km is very far away, hopefully you have LOS to a closer tower. Trees sure do affect LOS - are you sure you can't get over them with a 3m mast on your roof? Any other viable install points on your property with better LOS? You need to make sure which tower you will point at and it has to be a closer one.

Additionally the 0020(seems to support 3g from what I have read to confirm this morning) has a gain of 9dBi and the 0092 11dBI, I take this as being per antenna, so what difference would this make considering trees above?

Not sure - the LPDA-0092 is obviously the best bet but you want to get some height with those trees, or move the installation point.

Lastly Makro has the B593s-601 which will work on all networks, which one would Telkom provide? Will cost me about R300 more but I like the idea of going into Telkom store if they are any problems and them sorting the modem out( Have had a faulty modem from them before and it was replace with a new one in 10mins, SERVICE COUNTS:) )
The last unit I bought from a Telkom store was the 601 sub model. It seems this model is widely available now and is not network locked.

However this would probably lock me to TM network with not having the option to jump networks should I not be happy with their service or data package prices. Is this correct?

See above.

Apologies for all the questions but need to ensure I get what is needed. Don't mind spending what is needed but don't want to waste cash on what is not needed.
If that is your take on things, perhaps consider commissioning Poynting themselves to do your install. When I got a quote in October 2013 it was R1,200 (68km travel for my quote; site survey is R650+VAT). I didn't check your location so not sure if this is an option for you. Talk to Julene.

It could be if TM is renting this tower from MTN. But if it is not a case, you will have to buy more expensive roaming bundle, or go with Afrihost which use MTN infrastructure. Get prepaid SIM card and small data bundle if you want to know for sure.

Hi Guys
Does anyone perhaps know which of the B593's models (or firmware versions) support Dynamic DNS? It is important for me to have a router that supports Dynamic DNS, but I only realised after purchasing my B593u-91 (from Telkom) that it does not support Dynamic DNS (DynDNS).

The B593s-601 supports DDNS.

Thanks so much for your reply. So I suppose I am joining the line to get hold of the 601. Wonder what the chances are of getting one of those at Makro in Bloem...

Hi 949BFN

Suggest you contact their call centre and find out if stock is available at the branch or alternatively ask them you willing to purchase the modem on their online store but don't see it listed (quote article number) and if it is possible for them to add it on your profile(Makro Registration), pay for the device R1999 +a deliver charge of R50-70.

Good luck hunting these bad boys :)

Believe it or not, when I left Makro (Bloemfontein), they still had 5 601's on the shelf. Also marked something like R2,700.00, but sold at R1,900.00.

I will primarily use my B593-601 as a standalone solution to access IP security cameras and an irrigation controller. (That’s why it was important to me that it supports DDNS.)
I had the modem running in no time and I’m able to access the cameras (by running DynDNS on the modem and using port forwarding to the IP cameras). (By the way, I can also confirm that the 601 version works fine with both Telkom Mobile and Vodacom SIM cards. Strangely enough, Telkom’s LTE is however nearly twice as fast as Vodacom LTE where I stay. Usually get around 20Mbps down and around 8Mbps up with the Telkom sim and 4 out of 5 bars signal strength. (As opposed to Vodacom's 10Mbps down, with 5/5 signal)
Some more questions:
(a) I can’t find an option which one can enable to remotely manage the modem. Any suggestions (please bear in mind that the unit will not be connected to a PC, so I cannot use RDP to a PC to use that to access the modem.)
(b) The modem will be used in an area where there is mediocre 3G coverage (3 out of 5 bars). Will this antenna boost the (Vodacom) 3G signal as well: http://www.cyberconnect.co.za/4g-lte-medium-gain-antenna (I will “lock” the modem to 3G mode.) Or will this antenna be a better solution: http://www.cyberconnect.co.za/omni-directional-antenna-3g/gsm-medium-gain-boost-signal-strength If so, will it matter to which of the external antenna inputs it is connected?
Thanks for the help.

No, you can't remotely manage modem without computer. Small Raspberry device cand do. You also need alternative link and extra hardware to reset power (and restart modem) just in case modem is hanging.
Antenna. The first one is for LTE with MIMO (double speed), but not for TM (2300MHz). It might work, but not in MIMO mode. For remote (3G connection) all depends you want to be dependent on single tower. Maybe omnidirectional if there are more towers in the area, but less than 5 bars indicate that signal is weak, you need at least 10dBm at the receiving point (after cable loss). LDPA-0092

Perhaps a stupid question - but where can I buy this router? I have 4G/LTE with Vodacom at my office location. Is it best to go to Vodacom directly or buy from another source. Thanks for any and all help!

"Small Raspberry device cand do"
Thanks sajunky - never thought of that. I have a Rockchip MK808B "Google TV" lying around which I'm going to use (which could also solve the issue of some B593 models not having a Dynamic DNS "client")

What would you suggest I use to access the Rockchip remotely? I suppose the idea is to access the Android device remotely and use the Android web browser to access the router's web interface?

By the way, I make use of one of these devices to reboot the router remotely in case of trouble - works brilliant: http://www.isocket.eu/devices/.

Thanks for the advice regarding the antennas.

Makro has stock of the 601 variant of the B593, which seems to support all networks.

So Got myself a H593-91 from Tm this weekend. Unfortunately only get 1 bar signal at the moment regardless of connecting to 3g or LTE, so DL speeds vary, upload is literally non existent. And connection alternates between on and off most the time( wont even sign in to steam).

Best DL speed was 24mb and upload usually .06 to .5mb, only once id it go up to 1mb.
RSRP = -115
RsRP = -5 to -7

Strangely enough my house mate runs stable on TM network with his E5220 with DL speeds between 5-9mb and upload from 1 to 2mb with ping under 100. ( not the best stability for racing online but the man only plays DOTA). Signal strength is either orange or green. Never realized the signal would be so inferior to the mobile modem.

LOS will be fair as there are few high trees between me and the nearest tower 1.8km away, that is with panning for 3m pole mounted on of the roof.

So antennas are a must as previously considered, looking at my current stats 2 x 0092's will be the way to go.
From what I have read these should sort things out nicely once setup properly, am I correct in saying this?

Yes, MK808 is alternative. About accessing Android Web browser, it must be number of apps around, I don't know.

iSocket devices are nice, but expensive and require good GSM coverage. If your conection requires external antenna, a watchdog installed on Android device and monitoring connection status would do a trick, reseting power to the modem with help of extra DIY hardware.

@DeWilder: Yes it is strange that router with 6dBi antenna has lower radio sensitivity than ordinary modem. If it is really the case, I would take it back to the shop for checking. Also verify in settings that external antenna is off, just in case. With RSRP -115 something is wrong, as modem is working. Borrow the modem and do tests in the same room. Before forking out money for external antenna, walk around the house for the best spot and make WiFi hotspot or Ethernet wire from that place. If your data package is on-net disable roaming on the router, also decide for 3G or LTE and force router for single mode.

Makro, Telkom Mobile stores and Poynting. Vodacom don't sell the B593 (B2000) anymore.
