The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

Nope. Historically it never was Xmas deal. It could be a Christmas deal or just a deal during Christmas shopping fever, I don't know. Truth is if you don't wish people well, you will twist things and names around.

Stick to the thread please, this is a hardware discussion, its not an outlet for infantile behaviour.

Actually I need to re-test that with my new B593. I have a current ticket with Poynting but they haven't been too much help so far. Basically it seems to me that only one antenna is doing all the work and the other is just for show.

Now that I have the little paddle antennas that came with the new unit, I'll be able to prove if there's possibly an issue with the Poynting antennas.

This can be for number of issues, not neccessary a fault.
Question should be asked what is purpose of secondary antenna. Is it for receive diversity? If so, what kind of receceive diversity? There is one for using the same data stream for improving reliability, reducing number of bad packets. Lower latency, as such packets don't need to be retransmitted, as receiver can pickup a good one form another antenna. There is also another one for doubling speed. Each antenna is picking up different data stream, these packets are assembled from both receivers.

Are you sure that secondary antenna is not working? You need to do comprehensive download speed tests. Signal strenght indicator can be linked to the single antenna only, it could give you impression that secondary antenna is not working.
You need to position your first antenna to the tower for the best RSSI/SNR, then unplug and connect second antenna to the same plug and position antenna to the same or a different tower (depends on your preference, it could be for speed or reliability, but different tower can also increase speed). After finishing positioning make speed tests using single antenna or dual antennas and compare results.

Well according to Poynting, the antennas have to point at the same tower, one antenna perfectly aligned atop the other. There should be minimal degrees of separation. This I know I'm at fault with as I did a quick install and haven't had the time to fine tune. Also the distance between top and bottom antenna must be 50cm. Again mine are closer than that.

In Poynting's tests, they specifically tested one antenna then both, to demonstrate ping and speed improvements. I'm not getting this result at all.

I've asked them repeatedly for post-purchase assistance only to be ignored. They will of course do a callout at R1200...which I'm not sure is necessary given that on any given day, I now get 30-50Mbps - and of course I've seen 73Mbps as well.

AFAIK, LTE use 2x2 MIMO, pointing to the same tower is only one option.
Search ginggs posts on this forum for the subject "E1820 external antenna connector". It will help a lot! :)

Hmm, thanks for the heads up. I'm certainly open to trying this. I'll potter around this weekend and do a multitude of tests and publish the results here.

Bold claims considering one of the most world renowned authorities presenting the videos.... but yeah, will check for sure and then try and integrate here.

Sorry pal, I can read, not especially write, but when talking about education, watching videos is only supplemental to me. Much more must be done to do something constructive and innovative... :)

Hehe. Okay. Well the videos are all about LTE antennas and the way they work. Hopefully useful to someone shopping for an antenna(s) for their B593.

I may very well get an XPOL-A0002 and mount it right at the top of my mast for MTN and Vodacom LTE. There's not really space at the top for even more LPDAs, considering I need the height and they have to be spaced 0.5m apart.

What's in the box?

I quite like the little USB 'fly lead'. Makes for coupling an external hard drive that much easier.

I don't think the little LTE antennas are always included so I'm glad to have got them this time around. :) While I won't use them right now, they will be useful when I fall back onto Vodacom 3G since my external antennas are pointed at an MTN tower, yielding 1 bar Vodacom signal.

Included in the box when you get from Telkom Mobile.

Your link for $69 is way overpriced. You're better off getting a Poyning XPOL-A0001.

Hello Gentz...

Seeing as though support for this modem is basically non existent online I thought it would be a good idea to post your problems and solutions here for others to see. Or to maybe get input from other owners who might have a solution.

So my problem was that I could not connect to the VPN at work while using the B593. Neither could I connect to sky sports servers.

After a bit of digging around I found the firewall setting in the B593 cp and it was set to very strict (heavy filtering).I then lowered the rule to not filtered and woila, it solved my connection issues.

Regards

Hi guys. I installed the router today and get a signal strength of between 1 and 2 bars. Download speeds is quite fine ito local speed testing, but international speed testing did not shoot the lights out. Problem is, I cannot the xbox to sign in....tells me there is a MTU problem. The router MTU setting is 1500. I played around with low and medium figures, but no change. The UPNP is enabled.

Any ideas?

Ps ... Worked fine on 3G d link router on Vodocom, mtn and 8ta

Hi bud,

Try setting the firewall as mentioned in my previous post. Do not know if it will work but give it a try and report back.

Great stuff!! Changed setting to medium and no more problems. Thanks!

My ADSL line with Mweb account has been getting to slow for my liking, especially if I compare it with the download speeds I'm getting these days with my little Huawei E589u-12 router with Vodacom Sim Card. I typically get these kind of speeds with the E589 / Vodacom setup:

In fact, I often see actual download speeds in access of 1 MB/s on the VC network. With the ADSL line, I rarely average 5 Mbps.

When I saw the Telkom 50Gb with LTE Huawei 593 router deal, I jumped at the opportunity to get one of these to bump up the internet speeds at my home. I realised LTE is not available in my area (Bloemfontein), and the Telkom rep got me to acknowledge that at least 5 times, but I would have been happy with the kind of speeds I'm getting on Vodacom HSDPA - that would in itself be 3 to 4 times faster than my ADSL line – for that I would happily pay an extra R1,300 per month.. I was however expecting Telkom's HSDPA speeds to be comparable to that of Vodacom.

But a big disappointment awaited me - Telkom's HSDPA speeds is nowhere near that of Vodacom. Even though I have full 5 bars of signal on the 593, the Telkom HSDPA speeds are about half those of Vodacom:

Strangely, the upload speeds are higher on the Telkom network.

The somewhat higher download speeds compared to ADSL, is not going to compensate for the slow ping times, so the browsing experience will in all probability be the same or worse on the Telkom HSDPA compared to the ADSL line.

I realised that the generally slow ping speeds of the GSM network, would make it unacceptable for the kids to play online games, so I planned to keep the ADSL line for that purpose.

So, I’m somewhat disappointment. My plan did not work as well as I had hoped and since there is little hope of getting LTE in Bloemfontein within the near future, and even less of a hope of getting LTE in my area should LTE eventually arrives in Bloem, this (rather expensive) experiment sort of failed. Although the download speeds are higher than ADSL, it is not that much better making it worth the extra R1,300 per month for me.

But I will keep on experimenting. (One good thing is that the Telkom is unshaped, so torrents come down a lot faster compared to MWeb’s Uncapped ADSL)

While waiting for the modem to arrive, I thought I’ll purchase external antennas from Poynting, but they are not big on the customer service / online sales thing. I registered on their website to make an online purchase, but it’s week later and I still haven’t received the “activation link”. Even tried registering with a different email address, with the same result. So after about 2 days, I sent them an email indicating that I would like to purchase a set of their antennas – another 3 days have since past but still no reply. 
