The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

So i went on and took a chance, i took the modem. Hooked it up and got 3 bars of lte in my room. I didnt do that test with the laptop and usb 3g stick. But i can definatly say its running way better than my 3g modem did. Im not getting insane speeds but the connection is constant.
 
Congrats, DANNLER. You must be stoked. :D Investigate outdoor antennas if you don't mind a bit of effort to optimise your LTE connection.
 
Guys i have encountered a problem with my connection, not sure whats up and what to do, i have connected my router to my xbox via lan cable. its been working fine untill last night. Now i have plenty of connection errors and for some reason my primary dns says ''fe80:8ace:faff:fecf:cbc3%3'' and my secondary dns is saying ''8.8.8.8''

Whats up with that?

You're going to have to give us a bit more info than that for us to help you :D

1) Which sub-version of the B593 are you using ? B593s-601, or B593u-something ?
2) What cell network are you on, and which ISP are you with ? Both Telkom Mobile ?
3) Are those DNS results the ones reported by your B593 (in other words, the WAN-side DNS servers allocated by your ISP), or the ones reported on your xbox ? If xbox, how is your xbox set up to get its DNS - DHCP or manual ? If DHCP, is your B593 correctly set up as a DHCP server, or do you have another arrangement in place to allocate IP addresses ?

The second DNS is a Google public IPv4 DNS server, which makes some sense.

On the "Internet / Network Connection" page, check that your B593 is set for "PDP type" IPv4, not IPv4v6.

Iv been looking for an LTE Router for a while now... Im sort of "in between homes" so cant get a permanent set up yet... Is this router still a decent option? Im using normal 3G at the moment through my Tablet as a hotspot, which isnt great, but does the trick... I just dont want to invest in a router thats going to be useless in the not to distant future... I mainly want a Router that can create a wifi hub in my home that I can stream from my PC to the TV...

Hey Tom@

As a no-frills, rock-solid LTE modem/router that "just works", you can't go far wrong with the B593. For maximum compatibility with SA network operators, make sure you get hold of the B593s-601 version rather than the network-specific u-12 or u-91 devices. There is also one useful antenna-related feature on the s-601 firmware that the u-series devices don't have.
The firmware functionality on the s-601 has been dumbed-down a little compared to some earlier models, but all the basics are there.
You would have the option of using a B593 either on 3G (as you do now) or 4G/LTE, depending if you have good 4G signal in your area. If you only ever plan to use 3G, you might be better off with a 3G-only router like the B683/B68A, but why limit yourself ?

As regards the Wi-Fi and local streaming : I've only used the Wi-Fi functionality a little myself, and it seems reasonably good, though not as a good as a dedicated WAP, of course. It should be at least as good as (probably better than) a tablet hotspot.
Also remember that LTE will give you more than enough speed to stream video at 720p and 1080p from online services, not just content stored on a local PC. You would also have ample speed headroom to accommodate 4K video as that becomes more commonplace on streaming services.

As regards obsolescence and a future upgrade path, I think 4G/LTE will be around for quite a while - look how long 3G has been with us! As such, the B593 is always going to get you speeds of up to 80Mbps or so, which will be plenty fast for several years to come.
You could perhaps look at the newer Huawei E5186, which looks and works much the same but also offers higher-speed LTE-A. But to be honest I think LTE-A will still take a year or two to get full traction in SA.

Start by checking out your network/service provider options and 4G coverage in all the areas you might be living in. That will give you a good idea what you can do with a non-permanent antenna arrangement that can move with you if necessary.

I am pretty sure it is your DNS settings on your computer/Xbox (not on the router), as your router will auto-assign DNS from your ISP and they use their own (not Google one). Try IPv4 as suggested and also change to auto assigmnent on your device, but I am experiencing problem with malfunction of router's DNS relay at times on my B683. Perhaps it is linked to problems with Vodacom, but when it happen, any reference to certain Web sites are redirected to 'sitename.setup.com', which resolves to 192.168.1.1 (on the router), this is completely wrong.

Okay guys i just did a factory reset and now everything is all good

While these routers really shine in 3G/LTE connection, their routing software is somehow limited and buggy. While on B683 I can disable firewall completely, B593 is more restrictive in this area.
 
I just want to give you guys a quick update; the Telkom mobile only Huawei b593-601 router does indeed fall back to 3G mode. And it does work on MTN and on CELL C
 
Hey guys. I have a B593 router with connection problems. all worked well last night, and this morning when i woke up it had a solid red light at mode.

I took the simcard out and tried it on my old router. And there is connection, put the simcard back in and no connection. So its something on the router. I have done a factory reset but still the red light.

So what can cause that?
 
Try different SIM card, but it can be stuffed. Can you access management page?
 
auto, even if i set it to just 4g,3g or 2g it still doesnt work,

i have tried my cell c card and still the same

This router is not even a month old
 
Is it possible to prevent a computer on the network from accessing the internet and if so how?
I basically want to homeshare my itunes library with another pc on the network, but not provide internet access to that specific pc
