When you did the jailbreak, you had the option of installing Cydia and or installer. Now I think most people would agree with me that installer is no good (or is it just me? :D )
If you don't have Cydia, re-Jailbreak your phone and make sure you have selected that option. Then when you open cydia, you will have loads of apps to choose from.
Bare essentials for me is:
SBSettings,
Backgrounder,
BiteSMS (which is not free anymore, but well worth buying)
OpenSSL and OpenSSH (used for transferring files to your phone via wi-fi using WinSCP. There are other easier tools as well using USB

Fxit mentions some recommended apps on the first page (which may include these i mentioned - too lazy to go check now) :)

iPhone 2G stuck on "No Service"

I have been fiddling for the last two days now. The one discussion I found was around the baseband possibly being messed up. So in order to get the baseband reloaded I have had to:
  • downgrade from 2.2 to 2.0.
  • Uninstall iTunes 8 and install 7.5
  • downgrade to 1.4 (twice)
  • You then end up with 1.1.4 and the 2.0 baseband
  • Use KiPhone to downgrade the baseband
  • restore to 1.1.4 which gives you the correct baseband
  • jailbreak/unlock with good old iLiberty+ (those were the days ;))

Unfortunately I am still stuck with the "No service" message. All this interaction with the baseband seems to have gone fine, so my guess is the fault lies elsewhere. Maybe it's as simple as the internal antenna (if there is such a thing) becoming dislodged. At the moment I have brief spurts of 1 bar signal and the Vodacom network logo comes up, but I can't make calls (even to 111). It will also not receive calls.

My last attempt is a flash back up to 2.2.1 now that I am back on the stock 1.1.4 baseband, but I suspect the result will be the same :(

So then it's either claim from insurance or send it back to Apple in the US (it's probably a month from 1 year old). Does anyone have any experience with sending an iPhone back to Apple?

?

What I would do is...

1)Do a DFU restore using iTunes (latest 2.2.1 firmware)
2)Jailbreak/activate using pwngetool
3)Download bootneuter via Cydia via Wifi
4)Reflash my baseband and bootloader using bootneuter

If that does not work then it's hopeless.

I did actually have a go at bootneuter with a fresh load of 2.2 and it kept hanging after after detecting my settings (which indicated that everything was unlocked and neutered). It seems other people have also had the same problem with bootneuter 2.1 freezing after detecting settings and the dev team is working on it. It could however also be indicative of a HW problem.

I see... tough one.

Was it EchoZA that found a local repair shop? Was the feedback good?

I am sending the phone off at the end of the month to iGear for repairs, the other guys are a little cheaper, but I don't feel comfortable about sending my phone of to a Biltong shop... yup you read right, the address where you need to send to is a Biltong shop!

Please let us know how it goes. At this point it really looks like my options are a) sending it back to Apple US or b) claim from insurance. I am leaning towards b because it means a new 3G model which will be unlocked. I would guess apple will send me back a 2G, but if they send a 2.2.1 3G one I'm stuffed :p

what is wrong with yours?

It can no longer find a GSM signal. I suspect something has failed.

Hey man, had a friends iPhone having the same prob. Not sure He was on 2.1 firmware.

When did this start happening and how?

What i did was restore the phone in iTunes, fire up QuickPwn, and make sure the "Unlock" option was ticked. When BootNeuter did it's thing, it was fine again.

You've probably tried this, so it won't be much help, but thought i'd mention it anyways.

:( sucks though.. at least it's insured

It started on Saturday for no real reason. It was running 2.2 for a while without issues.

Yup I have been through 2.2 to 2.0 to 1.1.4 to downgraded baseband to 1.1.4 again with updated baseband to 2.2.1 quickpwn with fresh bootneuter, no joy.

I opened a claim with the insurance company today. They did not sound to phased about replacing it. Got some quotes for a replacement phone after work so once I send them through we'll see what they say.
