right folks, I need someone to help test a known issue on the marcforrest ipcc

I don't have everything I need to test, so I'm hoping there's someone here that does, you need:

iPhone 3G
O.S. 3.0 (preferably not jailbroken, but jailbroken OK)
any other phone that supports mms (not iPhone, or, iPhone 2.x with swirly OK)
any MTN/cell C phone (or access to an mtn/cell C phone) that can send mms
some time on your hands would help....

I can help later - what do u need me to do?

guys, keep in mind, 2.0 had similar issues, these will be ironed out, and my guess it will be done soon, apple usually has the first update for a major release out very fast

you don't want to go back to 2.x, as many app store apps won't be supported on 2.x anymore very soon

I guess you right, it sucks to go backwards though. I hope they sort this out chop chop.

Ok, regarding wifi..

How exactly does wifi work on a iphone or ipod touch?

If i'm sitting in a wifi hot spot how do I connect to the internet?

Noob questions I know but I've never used wifi before...

I've got a notebook with wifi capabilities, how do I connect my notebook with my iphone?

Settings -> Wifi -> switch on and wait for it to scan, then you can choose a network to join assuming you have the password OR it is an open network.
If it has a lock, it means it password protected and you probably have to pay to get access.

hehehe I created a ad hoc network and connected the phone, if the wifi is connected would the phone automatically use the internet connection or do I need to change something somewhere?

we're having a very annoying call drop issue with the ipcc, i think it has to do with mmn and cellc mms' not coming through

I think its more to do with the tethering. unplugging after tethering, and switching off 3G, the Call drop issue goes away.

have you applied any ipcc's to your phone, or did you just enter mms settings manually?

I initially entered setting manually - had failures mostly but managed to get 1 or 2 mms to go through when 3G was disabled.

After the latest ipcc was OK'ed by you, I deleted mms settings, rebooted, applied ipcc, rebooted.

I tried to tether and initially was told that I need to contact Vodacom. Eventually tethering started working (very well I might add.) - I take it this is the time delay that was mentioned.

MMS is still broken - only goes through sometimes and then only when 3G is off or out of reach

Well you have to connect to a valid network, so in the list you just select the network you want to connect, enter the network pass code and bobs your aunty.

But yes when the wifi is on, I believe it will only use the wifi assuming it has a signal. Which is actually another thing to burns me about OS3, when you take your phone out of stand-by it takes so dam long for the wifi to reconnect, or at least the wifi icon only comes up like 30 seconds later.

ok, currently we're speculating that the call drop issue is related to the mms' you haven't received from mtn, sort of a, the phone keeps trying to download these, and fails, and the continuous apn switching that occurs is what drops your calls

so to test:

  • VC sim in iPhone, vc phone on 3G and configured to receive mms
  • use mtn phone to send iphone several mms'
  • wait 10 minutes or so
  • confirm mms working on vc iPhone by sending mms to yourself
  • make call with VC phone (to voicemail or other), see if the call holds (will drop within the first 25 seconds with a "call failed" or "call dropped" message on the iphone
  • remove vc sim from iphone, put it in your extra mms capable phone
  • wait for all mtn mms' to be received
  • return sim to iphone
  • confirm iphone mms working by sending mms to yourself
  • re-attempt calls to see if call drops keep happenning

this is basically to confirm what is causing the call drops, it's definitely to do with apn settings, most likely the mms apn (not tethering apn as someone suggested earlier i'm afraid)

I might be able to do this later this week, just need to get my spare phone back which i loaned to a friend

I must be honest I am not enjoying OS3 - Its slow and jittery / Laggy. Fsking annoying I must say :(

I am finding it a little faster overall but still with the laggy home button which is irksome, taking almost 3 seconds to quit an app at times

Think I might start agreeing with you :( Not living up to the hype
My battery life seems to have also shortened...not sure why though ??

Had the same issue - was horrified once I'd set up the numerical battery to see it going down 25% in about 2hrs... solved it by disabling push. I have been using my phone all day (safari/mail/calls quite liberally) without push and I am still sitting on 85% :)

disabling mms has the same effect, especially if you have an mtn/cellc mms waiting for you from somewhere, phone keeps switching apn's trying to download it, i've blanked my mms apn out, that way things are fine, push service needs to reconnect to server every time there's an apn switch, apn switching doesn't happen if you don't have an mms apn...

here's where vodacom could be nice and allow access to the mmsc via the existing data apn, but we all know what vodacom's response to that will be

so, I need some convincing

is BeeJive worth the price, or, better idea to sit and wait for meebo? considering we don't know what meebo's gonna cost?

Rhetorical question? :D

ok, in all fairness though, no one has posted success or failure on this?

you can jailbreak with redsn0w 0.7.2, however, i would suggest the following:

install icy only, NOT CYDIA
then use icy to install cydia after the jailbreak

i haven't tested this, but it's what i would do if i had to, i feel a LOT more comfortable with 0.7.1, i restored after using 0.7.2 because of the related issues
