MMS for 3.0 on vodacom

so it's official, it's a vodacom network issue, NOT an iPhone issue

the latest and greatest ipcc correctly configures mms, however, some of the vodacom 3G towers appear to be connected to an MSC that has no channel to the mmsc/mms apn

basically what this means, if you are connected to one of these towers, and your phone's 3G is enabled, your phone will get a notification from the network that tells it there's an mms waiting on the server

here's where the issues start, the phone now continuously tries to activate the mms apn, if and when this works, it tries to connect to the mms gateway, this step fails, it then activates the normal data apn again, waits a few seconds, and starts the process all over again

this continuous apn switching is what interrupts the phones usually stable connection to the 3G network, and results in unstable data connection and dropped voice calls when on 3G

you have one of two options to overcome this

1) disable mms and delete the mms apn on the phone, and install swirlyMMS, swirly will only activate the mms apn once you tap on the mms, i.e, altering the connection state is manual, only when you, the user, asks swirly to do so by opening an mms. swirly is currently unstable, and reboots the phone when downloading an mms through one of these towers on gprs, but, you can always wait until you're somewhere else and try again... this instability is bound to be fixed in a next release though

2) use the existing iphone mms client, when your connection seems unstable, you probably have an mms waiting and you're in one of these areas, so, disable 3G, wait for the mms to deliver and re enable 3G, or disable mms until you move out of the problem area

in the meantime, i suggest reporting the location where your mms over 3G fails to vodacom so they get enough reports to look into the issue, right now they believe there is no issue

Not sure I understand - why do other brands of 3G phones work with MMS on VC then?

well, maybe because you don't always know you're in a bad 3G cell zone?

mms is always dodgey at best, maybe now we know why... in certain areas it's great, but i've had issues with other phones before, just never dug too deep

Now my tethering option is gone after I installed the new IPCC's from marcf's site. - No problem though PDANet works fine.

I just asked my mate (sitting next to me) to send me an mms from his 3G enabled VC BB Storm - worked flawlessly.

so do you guess that all other phones do indeed have "workarounds" to get round VC's crappy MMS implementation but the iPhone doesn't?

well, can your iPhone send over 3G from the same location? if not, has it been able to send over 3G elsewhere?

remember, i don't know any of this for a a fact, i'm applying best guess, used to be in telecoms so do know a little about the setup

latest & greatest vodacom ipcc

latest ipcc now uploaded and available on Marc's blog:

if the current one is working for you there's no need to update, i've found that if you mess too much with ipcc's on your phone it gets a bit screwy

no - only with 3G off

never been able to send with 3G on but that could be 'cause i've always tried from the same cells i presume

well, with the last few ipcc's i could never send over 3G either, i restored, put the new ipcc on, and for the first time in some time my mms sending over 3G worked, got to the office, and it doesn't work here

so i'm doing the swirly thing, less of a stuff up on the phone

I applied the new ipcc - didn't want to send mms with 3G connected.

Restored, restored backup, applied ipcc, rebooted - still failed

Restored, did not restore backup, applied ipcc, rebooted - SUCCESS!

So my question is: is there any way to get my sms history etc back without restoring my backup? (not JBed)

there's info on how to do this in an earlier post, not going to look for it for you...

thanks thanks! had to get mxit for some reason.

I ended up deleting MXit - was giving me lots of warnings about memory etc. App also felt very slow for me. This was when I was still using 2.2.1 though.
I now tend to chat to my MXit buddies from my Google Talk account in BeeJive :D

SBsettings is so great, and winterboard.. I've been on stock 3.0 for so long and having these installed is unbelievable, can't imagine my iphone without it

Just tested it - still no MMS over 3G :(
Don't think it's a network issue because on a clean restored phone (no ipcc applied) I can send MMS over 3G (typing settings in manually).
Think I'm now officially gonna wait until it is sorted out or until Vodacom (eventually) releases it with the new firmware...
