So you bought it from the official Apple Store in HK?

If I were you I would ship it back to them Monday morning and tell them to replace it.

Maybe by 'any' they mean any HK network?

Can't help you dude. Sorry. Let me know what you do on Monday when you ship it there.

Hi Limnos

I bought my phone from Vodacom 2 weeks ago as an upgrade to my current Vodacom contract and it is having exactly the same problems as described by Raevinn. If you are correct in your summing up of Raevinn's problems, then Vodacom is also selling non legit phones! I thought Vodacom was the approved seller in SA, how can they be selling these phones too????

Ok, so I've been trying to get hold of apple Hong Kong, but on the apple site it says that they do not support any online assistance. I can't get hold of their email address though, and it doesn't seem like there are any addresses for iphone support. flip....

I spoke with Vodacare this am. My i phone is still with them, them cannot tell me when it will be repaired. Raevinn, once they have identified the problem, I will let you know

thx simonbee, I'm trying to erase all settings from it now, kinda don't really have much else to do.

No iPhone can be advertised as unlocked.

I think you got scammed dude....

What they do is solder a TurboSIM of X-Sim INTO the iPhone without you knowing it and then advertise it as 'unlocked'. Do you understand how much **** Apple will be in if they sell 'unlocked' iPhones ONLY in Japan and not the rest of the world? The other networks would sue them!

Check these photos out and these forums: (Notice the one poster mentions Hong Kong)

Apple is an amazing product. I have been selling first generation iPhones since they were first released, and haven't had any of my customers complain.

All the 'faulty' errors are usually software related and can be sorted out.

I did read somewhere that TurboSIMs cause 'No Serice' errors, or cannot find singal.

Try popping open your iPhone - maybe there is a TurboSIM soldered into it you don't know about it....

I don't completely agree limnos, SA's 3G iphones are unlocked to work on any network??

ok, so I'm having a little progress on my phone. I got signal from vodacom for about 2 seconds, then it dissapeared again. My iphone is also not constantly resetting itself and has managed to activate itself in the brief period that I had vodacom signal. Basically now its a little laggy and has no signal. Anyone know how I could fix this?

that link explains exactly what has happened to my iphone. I'm trying to jailbreak it now, which will hopefully sort the issue but I'm not too sure that it'll work

Have you tried what this guy did:
This happened to my friends phone a few times. I jailbroke it, and he never had the problem again.

Are you on a mac? You can also try deleting the ~/Library/Lockdown folder, restore the phone and then try reactivating it.

Have you contacted Apple HK to ask them if you can DHL the phone to them?

It is obviously a problem with the iphone in general, irrespective of from where it was purchased. Mine was purchased in a Vodacom shop in South Africa and has exactly the same problems. We are now being inconvenienced because Apple is selling a product that does not work properly.

Hi, this is the 1st time I've used this forum, so forgive my ignorance

I have an Edge iphone that was jailbroken so that now has software ver 1.1.3

There are new apps out (e.g. BLoomberg's) that require software upgrades, but I am worried about upgrading and then the phone doesn't work anymore. Now that apple is offering the phones through vodacom, is there a safe way to upgrade to a later software version. My contract is through vodacom anyway...

Any help would be awesome

Guys please refer to the FIRST post in this thread. All the necessary tutorials are there to update firmware and jailbreak.

@Newb-Lite - What exactly do you mean by 'normal method'. You first gen iPhone won't work UNLESS it has been unlocked via jailbreak method (QuickPwn or PwnageTool app.) You can find step by step tutorials on the first post. If you need any help after you have attempted, return for help. And you will end up jailbreaking your iPhone after noticing on how much you are missing out on!

@ntu - Welcome :)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with updating  Your version is 4 versions outdated - so I would definitely recommend an update. Refer to Post #1 for tutorials. If you need any help dont hesitate to ask..

o ok thanx lim ... is there no way i can just use it like a guy that got it from vodacom and hasnt jail broken it?
thus i just plug it into itunes and update or something

EDIT: i think i might be cryptic as im not 100 % sure what im talking about...

there used to be some activation that had to be bypassed ... do we still need to bypass this , or can any iphone now be activated if you are on vodacom?

jailbreaking is just for neater apps etc, am i right?

You have to 'Activate' it FIRST with a Vodacom SIM before it can work on any network.

yup, but activation using a vodacom simcard is waay different from a phone being network locked

correct me if i'm wrong though, this might only be available to iPhone 2G, but i thought quickpwn (jailbreaking) activates the phone as well?
