You are using safari? Safari unzips files automatically so uncheck 'open safe files' under preferences to disable it and the ipsw will download fine.
But I recommend you download using iTunes instead to be sure you have the right IPSW, choose 'download only' when iTunes prompts to download and quickpwn automatically looks in the iTunes folder when it searches for the IPSW.
QuickPwn does not sort of activating for 3G. Correct me if I am wrong, but last time I tried it did not activate. I had to build my own IPSW in PwnageTool and select 'Activate Phone' in the first menu..
Just done mine - flawless upgrade and Jailbreak with QuickPwn. Damn - wish someone told me to backup my Cydia apps with the Cydia backup tool - they all gone - I have most of them luckily and don't have to download them again. Need to get Swirly and iRealSMS back asap.
I hadn't installed anything, I was typing an sms
Just very bizarre, that the phone was dead, and I had to use reboot short cut to start it up and not the power button.
Thanks for the reply though, if you or anyone else does come across it or a reason, I'd love to know more.
Cheers.
adsl3g, have you used biteSMS as well, i read in the forum somewhere iRealSMS is not so good, but would you consider it an improvement on biteSMS? I just want to be able to add contacts to sms messages and forward, would be really great to get delivery reports as well actually.... does iReal support these?
Ok guys, I'm a bit confused with the soft unlock and upgrades, etc, when it comes to jailbreaking 2.2
Basically here is the situation:
On Friday my iphone 3g randomly stopped working. Lost signal and kept saying sim locked. I would unlock it, but in two minutes the same message would pop up. The OS kept hanging as well. Turning on and off didn't help. Eventually a message appeared saying something along the lines of - the phone cannot make calls and needs to be serviced.
Connected to itunes and couldn't restore. It downloaded the latest itunes but said I could not restore because internet connection could not be established. Was totally freaking out at this point. Did a hard DFU restore - still no internet connection message, even though the connection was fine - I could access the itunes store, etc. Just not restore.
Tried on my friends laptop - same problem. We kept doing putting it into DFU mode and eventually it worked - iphone was restored and then upgraded to 2.2.
My question is - can/should I jailbreak now? I'm not not sure because of all the warning messages about the soft unlock, baseband, etc.
Yes raptor - I love my iPhone too. I just bought my second one - this time a legal 3g iPhone, cost me 7800 bucks for the 16gb, but worth every penny. My first one I bought at the Apple store in Orlando, Florida for $599.00 in February 2008, if I remember right.
Now my question....
This new 3g GPS iPhone is super fantastic, and I have loaded a free GPS app onto it. But...it needs to sit in a secure cradle up near the dash so it can receive sat signals. I have looked all over but cannot find a suitable cradle for the iPhone. Preferably one that will charge the iPhone at the same time - but I doubt I will find that in SA. Just a good cradle that holds it firm, then I can use my 12v charger cable to charge it from the outlet.
Thanks for any help. Love them 's
Hi Roland - Since the new version 2 there are no issues with iRealSMS - it is now compatible with SwirlyMMS and does support the insertion of contact details into an SMS. It also supports delivery reports although I have not tried it on the Vodacom network - you need to specify some or other code in the settings to get delivery reports. The big thing for me is the templates for my alarm system that works on SMS codes.
I paid for it in a shot and uninstalled BiteSMS.

sounds decent.... last thing, biteSMS also allows "insert my current location"... any chance iReal has this as well??
I must say that after the 2.2 update 'push' email seems to work much better with my gmail account.
But what if the iphone is so screwed up that it can't be restored?

biteSMS does that because if you swipe your finger in the text bar you can add your current location and sms it to someone to come find you![]()
push email on gmail?? do tell, how??
i set the phone to check email every 30 minutes on my gmail account
Can't happen
Dude, my phone was stuck on the pineapple screen and just kept on vibrating the whole time... How more screwed up can you get than that?
And I managed to get it into DFU mode then fresh restore.
