Found a solution..

Download SQLite Database Browser for FREE.

Load your SMS.db into the broswer and export it as a .CSV - does the job.

Other forums have been raving about this PhoneView 2.1.2 application, can't get hold of it though as it's website keeps on timing out!

It will be easier to backup your data in iTunes, download the 2.2.1 firmware file, restore your phone to 2.2.1 (or upgrade if you must) and follow the tutorial here. Restore is usually recommended though.

Dear Mr Fixit,

I've followed all the steps in the tut, and I have my iPhone now fully upgraded to 2.2.1 firmware. Thanks for all your help, I've even got my custom ringtones in place and the problem with the battery not charging (or not showing that it's charging) is also resolved.

One last question, if I may: how do you remove custom ringtones once you have them on your iPhone?

Great to hear!

No problem man good to hear u sorted.

Did you sync them in iTunes? (the ringtones)

Just delete them from iTunes and when you sync your phone again they will delete off of it.

Alternatively, now that you've jailbroken, follow my steps on "How to SSH over USB" on the first page. It's really simple! Then just go to the /Library/Ringtones folder and delete / upload whatever ringtones you like there. You can convert a song to .AAC in iTunes, right click the converted AAC song, rename to .m4r, and upload it to that /Library/Ringtones folder using the "SSH Over USB method" and they will work :)

You have also jailbroken the device just btw. So now you can do all jailbrake stuff via Cydia. Have a look around there and see what you like. Some recommendations are on the front page as well. Stuff like 5 dock icon, Cycorder, Copy paste, SBSettings etc etc.

Enjoy

Yeah... they're fascinating little thingies, I've already downloaded a bunch but was actually looking for the application I had before upgrade to send MMS - not Swirly, there was a better one than that.

I have that shake, rattle, roll thing installed now, just flip the phone over if I don't want to answer. This is awesome, thanks again.

I got to the end of the QuickPwn thing and it said the SIM wasn't valid, nearly had a fit but then researched a little, went back to QuickPwn and somehow it did it all in one shot.

BTW, I'm not a man... lol, no wonder you guys want me to sell my phone!

:o Sorry ma'm :) Not sure which MMS app you're talking about but Swirly does the job for me :)

Enjoy!

Last question, then I'm done for now:

Do we have GPS available for the phone or not yet? If we do, please direct me to the thread/page because I will have to start from scratch

Thanks

You said you have the 2G version. We don't have GPS available yet. They say they will release a GPS add on for our phones soon though. But still, we need proper detailed maps for the phone and then we should be good to go.

You can read up about GPS on the iPhone 3G (which has it built in) here (there's an even newer version than that out apparently). Not sure if it works here in SA though. Don't have a 3G iPhone to test it on :(

Dont want to use the headphone socket, taped it up. With the ipod, I got a freakin nice car charger that also connects to the aux socket, even though its not digital the sound was amazing

so just use that one??

or doesn't it charge the phone?

if it doesn't charge the phone there's an accessory on igear that fixes that

just get iphonebrowser for windows, no need to muck about with ssh then, just plug the phone in and run iphonebrowser and you can access the whole file system?

I thought xGPS sells an add on already?

I am still having problems getting my data connection to work. I am not using the sim from the contract, I am using a vodacom PAYG sim. Over wifi everything is 100% but using GPRS/3G I get a message saying "you are not subscribed to a cellular data service" The PAYG sim works fine for GPRS on my old htc p4350 so im not sure whats wrong. The Data settings on iPhone just say iphone.vodacom.za with no user/pass.

Secondly, with iTunes gift certs. I obviously already have got myself a USA based iTunes account with that handy workaround. Where is best these days to buy the gift certs. Somewhere thats going to mail you the cert number would be best.

No we don't. It's no use having a GPS receiver in the phone, when there's no apps or maps to support it. We won't be seeing GPS navigation on the Iphone anytime soon in SA.

I'm having problems on my exhange account for mails. It's a standardbank email address but it keeps saying connection to server failed any help?

Change that setting to the same as on your other phone and it should work. You have not been provisioned to use that APN on the SIM you using. The normal one will work though (can't remember what it should be - Fxit??)

Yeah just use "internet" as the APN instead of "iphone.vodacom.za"

Standar banks' mobile exchang certificate expires every few hours, so you have to connect with wifi to refresh the certificate, then exchange via 3G works again for a while

Which dept you in?

I got my iphone yesterday, and I'm loving it!

I have one question though: I want to save a number from my call list to a contact, but I can't figure out how. Is this possible?

Thanks for the help!
