Apple News | Apple Seeds iPhone 3.0 Gold Master to Developers With WARNING

Apple has seeded the iPhone OS 3.0 Gold Master to developers but warns it will lock your iPhone into "testing" mode.

This version of iPhone OS 3.0 should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software development. By installing iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software
on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently “locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to an earlier release of iPhone OS. Bear this in mind before installing the software.

Although we have not had a chance to investigate this deeply we would strongly suggest that normal users DO NOT install the GM seed which is bound to spread across the internet soon.

To me this just looks like a "minor" internal refresh. The real magic is still OS 3.0. If Apple sticks to it's yearly upgrade cycle I will just about be ready for the 4th gen when my contract expires. :)

Actually thinking about it some more. What if Apple was working on a new external design, but it was not ready in time (Palm Pre pressures and all)? So they knew what internal changes they wanted to make and just stuck them in the old body. Voilà! The fanboys are happy, the Pre fanfare is dimmed and you buy yourself another year to come up with a proper product refresh.

you guys think there's any meat to the "permanently locked in testing mode" bull?? nothing a restore can't fix in my opinion...

Yeah not sure what to make of it either. Hope my dev ID is still valid, busy downloading it from RS as we speak.

BTW is this emoticon new? :erm:

uhm, can i ask you a major favour, please send me the .torrent file??

behind a seriously firewalled network connection at work, and with the .torrent i can download it on the iphone and copy it back to my pc....

rename the .torrent to .renametotorrent and mail to my forum username @gmail.com
 
ok quickshare is back up..but being slow

trying to UL in two parts for you guys for each firmware

(i dont know if we need a UDID account for them to work, but i don't think so.. afaik this is the final 3.0 release version, just released early to developers. also don't know if it updates baseband etc so watch out)

edit quickshre down.. need a local place to UL..

hmmm... thanx Fx

already downloaded it myself, found the torrantula app on cydia, brilliant torrent client for the iphone, crashed once or twice, i'm guessing it's not playing well with os 3.0 yet... lol

but here's how I got that done

jailbreak os 3.0 beta 5
install open ssh
install torrentula from cydia (it installs safari download plugin and a few others)
with torrentula, on minova torrents, download the .torrent file
ssh to the phone, /var/mobile/library/downloads/
rename the file to a .torrent
run torrentula on the phone again, browse files, pick the torrent, and choose download
takes less than an hour on decent 3G connection
ssh to the phone, copy the downloaded ipsw to your machine
do the upgrade as per usual with iTunes (shift+restore)

only bummer

now i'm going to miss my jailbreak again :( >sob<

torrentula is however now my official favorite app on the phone... muahahaha
 
Comments on hackint0s suggest you don't need a dev ID for this firmware to work.

I normally had to punch holes in my firewall before the restore would start with the betas (dev ID checks) which I did not need to do with this firmware. So it looks like this is the final version and you don't have to be a dev to install it. Attempt at your own risk though :)

@roland. I used rapidshare links, I can pass them on to you if you like?

Update: Firmware installed and activated, busy restoring...
