Ok... so I have by 6th iphone in hand... 3 have been dropped, and drowned and lost! But now...a shiny new 3GS. The weather is perfect for technology :) and tweaking!!

I was wondering whether there were any installation tips? i.e Do I need to set it up as a new iphone, or can I just go with a restore? I remember reading something about battery life being compromised on a restore?

Also, any progress on the whole MMS & Tethering f-up?!

Thanks guys,

M

Rather start with a fresh install. A restore can have some issues with battery life, hopefully that will be sorted in the 3.1 release.

MMS and tethering is still a grey area in VC. Some people can get it to work others cant. Best thing to do, install Swirly MMS and leave all factory mms settings blank.

Enjoy the new iPhone, and if you decide you want to go onto your 7th phone, drop that one into a box and send it my way :)

iPhone Firmware 3.0.1 is out
See: http://www.tuaw.com/2009/07/31/did-we-say-saturday-iphone-os-3-0-1-out-now-to-block-sms-exploi/
Maybe it's already Saturday in the UK, or close to it: Apple has released iPhone OS 3.0.1 for iPhone, iPhone 3G & 3GS, an update that patches the phone to prevent bad actors from taking it over or taking it down with the just-demoed SMS exploit. The update weighs in at close to 300 MB (like all iPhone updates, it's a full image of the OS), and as far as we can tell there are no other fixes or tweaks; just the privilege of continuing to use your iPhone in peace and security.
Update with care, and let us know in the comments how the update works for you!

People with Jailbroken devices would be advised to hold off as always.

So all you who were lucky enough to get a 3GS ... start your downloading. Here are direct download links:

Firmware 3.0.1 for iPhone 2G

Firmware 3.0.1 for iPhone 3G

Firmware 3.0.1 for iPhone 3GS

Edited at theron.rolands request:
before downloading, jailbreak is not yet available, so upgrading to this firmware will temporarily remove any jailbreak until the dev team release an update to redsn0w that supports this firmware

IMPORTANT WARNING FOR 3GS OWNERS - DO NOT INSTALL THIS FIRMWARE BEFORE GRABBING YOUR iBEC AND iBCC FILES, THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE WITH A PHONE CURRENTLY ON 3.0 - SEE ICLARIFIED FOR TUTORIAL

After the update you should be able to jailbreak, as per redsn0w and dev team.

Hi Roland. Sorry, only read your reply now, i was busy moving so things were bit hectic.

That wouldnt work, as i did a full restore last time, and never installed ActivateMMS2G from Cydia, which means i cant change mms apn.
I have swirly installed (and swirly also wont notify me of new mms, i need to open swirly first then they come through)

3Gs update:
speed is really refreshing, feels like everything's backgrounded...
network connectivity seems more stable, especially considering i've configured mms with the messaging app
accessory support is a bit disappointing, i have a dension docking system in my car, which used to charge both ipod touch and iphone 3G, it's not charging the iphone 3Gs thoug ;(
also, when docked to the dension, and connected to bluetooth, things get funky, phone jumps between bluetooth audio and dock audio from time to time
magnometer is a really cool party trick at the moment, there's definitely a lot of potential, but nothing's been developed yet that makes use of this
voice control is great, but doesn't really support south african name sets, so, struggles to figure out how the names on your contact lists should be pronounced

all things i'm sure 3.1 will address...

loving the phone though :)

That's awesome Roland! Glad you enjoying your new iPhone! What colour is it?

Saw a video on YouTube, comparing boot up times between 3G and 3GS - very impressive!!

Wow - sounds really really cool!! Hope you enjoying your new 3GS :D

LOL, i just got the following email from Gumtree when I asked them why they kept deleting my ad selling my 2g iPhone on their free classified site.

"Hi there, I’m afraid that for the safety of our users we do not allow the sale of iphones on the site."

How does it bring safety to users to not sell iPhones on their site? I didn't realize iPhone's were dangerous!

apparently fraudsters were catching loads of people by offering iphones on gumtree. and we know just how much the iphone blinds our judgement. ;)

it is actually funny as there are constant posts for the new 3gs 32gb for less than 3,000 rand. In my opinion, anyone that gets swindled by that with promises of it being shipped from the UK AFTER payment in cash is made, deserves to be swindled.

True that - if a deal is too good to be true, then it's exactly that - too good to be true!!

Hey Roland,

I'm having a very similar experience! Loving it, it's never left my side :)

So, MMS works box standard? No drama?

32gig 3Gs is only available in white in SA, 16 is available in white and black... 32 gig white here

Can anybody confirm my experience: it seems when charging my 3Gs though USB the battery drains a LOT faster than when I charge with the AC adapter - even when not in use.

USB charging of any kind (even when only syncing a couple of tracks with iTues) seems to have an immediate negative impact on battery life, untill the next full charge on AC.

I can confirm this.

M

mms still has issues on vodacom, due to 3.0, but, on 3gs it doesn't appear to impact the rest of the phone as bad as it does on the 3G
