I just recommend upgrading to 3.1 first and then attempt to jailbreak 3.1.

I had Wifi issues and I had lost my carrier logo (this was just a cosmetic issues, my connectivity to VC was fine).

yes I did that last night. And now that i think about it, i was just to tired to think straight and i gave the sms db that i copied over from my backup the incorrect file permissions. So if i cant get a local jailbreak FW today/dev team jb for windows, I will try again tonight, and make a complete how-to on doing it. Really wasnt that difficult. Just time consuming

Then I did a fresh restore to 3.0, and then jailbroke with redsn0w 0.8.
Activate your phone etc with iTunes, but dont bother installing anything just yet...

Once you have done this, shift click restore in iTunes, no need for DFU or recovery mode. Select the custom 3.1 FW and sit back and wait!

Oh and it installs Icy and Cydia :confused:

there is currently no JB for 3GS! This is for 3G, and yes I say it works. But I will know 100% when I do it again and when i have some time to play with the settings. Last night i was to far past sleep point to wanna do anything more :P

BB would be option 2, but only if its the one with 3G etc. All the BB guys complain about the iPhone not having basic use, but most dnt have any 3G...
 
Vodacom don't support 3.1

I have just been told by Vodacom Customer Care that they don't support the v. 3.1 of the firmware and can therefor not provide support for MMS not working properly!!

bulldust, try again, they even have an operating procedure for settings etc. the consultant you spoke to spoke from memory, didn't check his sytem

MMS works for me out the box with 3.1., no issues.

Haven't tested other networks but MMS with 3G on works, thought other networks should work as well

3.1 includes the settings for vodacom if you do a clean install.
 
I update to 3.1 and was able to send and receive mms to MTN.

But something I have found...since updating to 3.1 and then down to 3.0 again, my phone takes a very long time to get signal. Must be something to do with the baseband update...

You don't need to set certain file permissions when SSH the backup of sms.db over.

Just ssh into the device using terminal and type:
chown -R mobile /var/mobile
 
ok so i JB my 3G again....and everything works so far. Put all my backups in place, no issues. The basic cydia apps are installed.

For those with a iPhone 3G, this is what to do...

Do a upgrade /restore to official 3.1 and set it up as a new phone. This way tethering, mms etc will all work. The carrier logo will still appear after the JB.
Next do a restore back to 3.0 official. It will come up with an error, this is NORMAL, iTunes with tell you the phone is in restore mode. And this stage you need to download iRecovery from iHackintosh - http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/07/irecovery-iphone-recovery-mode-loop-restart/ Follow the steps there to get your phone out of recovery mode.
Now you need to jailbreak with redsn0w using the official 3.0 FW. Jailbreak as normal.
Once you have set the phone as a new phone you need to RESTORE the hacked FW. For this you need to SHIFT click-Restore selecting the hacked 3.1 FW

You should now have a JB iPhone 3G 3.1

First install OpenSSH so you can access the phone and copy your backups onto the phone. Once you put your backups of SMS, address book etc, install Terminal on your phone, log in "su" to root and run the following command: chown -R mobile /var/mobile

Then you can go ape and do what you want. I have installed Winterboard, biteSMS, openssh, mobileterminal, appsync for 3.1, iphonedelivery.

Has anyone else on JB 3.1 confirmed any other working apps?

just gotta wait for redsn0w or 3GS Mac JB to be released now :(
And WRT your backups... if you dont have anything you wanna keep on the phone.. do you sill need to do backups?
