Thousands of Ford owners may be driving a 'ticking time bomb' with flawed air bag repairs

Ford found that some repair techs failed to replace recalled air bags, leading it to fine dealerships and launch a five-year reinspection program.

Ford Motor Co. is in the midst of a five-year “recall of a recall,” reinspecting more than a quarter-million vehicles after the company discovered sloppy work and false billing by dealership technicians during the required replacement of dangerous Takata air bags.

Customers whose repair records mistakenly reflect fixes never made are at risk from the devices, which can explode without warning and spray shrapnel on vehicle occupants.

Part of the problem is that no one — not the drivers, Ford, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — knows exactly which vehicles weren’t repaired correctly. Among the challenges is that Ford must track down current owners of vehicles as old as 2004 models and reinspect them...:oops:
 

BMW Issues 79,670-Car Recall over Potential Brake System Malfunction - Car & Driver​

BMW is recalling 79,670 vehicles over a potential problem with the braking system, as detailed in recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The vehicles involved in the recall include the BMW 530i, 740i, 760i, i5, i7, X1, X5, X6, X7, and XM and the Rolls-Royce Spectre. The majority of vehicles recalled are X1 (14,679), X5 (20,401), and X7 (29,578) models.

According to NHTSA documents, the BMWs' integrated brake system "may not function according to specifications." This may mean drivers experience extended braking distance or potential loss of vehicle control, increasing the possibility of a crash.

The documents state that even in the event of a malfunction, mechanical braking and the emergency brake aren't affected by the issue and the emergency brake would automatically activate in the event of a loss of braking performance.

BMW also said that a warning light or message will appear in the instrument cluster if there is a problem with the braking system.

How is Takata still in business if they are still making junk airbags that need recalls all the time?
These are quite recent model vehicles, nothing close to the age of the original mega recall of their airbags
 
1.5 million BMWs recalled globally over brake system: Here’s how many SA cars are affected

Automobile giant BMW has announced a worldwide recall of 1.5 million vehicles over potential faults with their integrated braking system.

The German carmaker said the fault could, in rare instances, affect braking pressure as well as the functioning of the ABS and DSC systems.

BMW’s local spokesperson confirmed to IOL that 3,700 BMW and Mini vehicles were potentially affected in South Africa.

These include the BMW X1, X2, X5, X7 and XM crossovers, as well as the 5 Series and 7 Series sedans and the Mini Cooper and Countryman.

The vehicles in question were built between June 2022 and August 2024, and the issue also affects a number of newly-built vehicles that have not been sold as yet. This is an expansion of a much smaller recall that was initiated internationally earlier in 2024.

The carmaker said that owners of affected vehicles were contacted and, where possible, messages were sent via their vehicles.

Furthermore, a Diagnosis Software is now available to detect the potential braking fault before it occurs, and this is already fitted to some of the affected vehicles.

If a fault is detected, the software displays a message on the vehicle’s central screen, requesting the owner to visit a BMW or Mini partner, which will then replace the braking system free of charge.

 
Citroen issues ‘urgent’ airbag recall for C3 and DS3 models in South Africa

Stellantis South Africa has issued an urgent airbag recall for Citroen C3 and DS3 models that were manufactured between 2009 and 2019.

The carmaker said customers should stop driving these vehicles immediately and contact their nearest dealership as soon as possible to schedule a free replacement of their Takata airbags.

Stellantis said the airbag replacement process would take less than two hours to be performed.

This is the latest development in the Takata airbag saga that has seen more than 100 million vehicles recalled globally, across multiple brands. Takata airbag inflators are known to have caused at least 28 deaths in the US, mostly from Honda-made vehicles.

“Chemical components of Takata airbags can deteriorate over time, especially when exposed to hot and humid climatic conditions. In the event of a collision requiring the airbag to deploy, the airbag inflator may rupture with excessive force, potentially causing serious injury or even death,” Stellantis South Africa said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
