Looking at a new PC Build:

@Ponder - Any thoughts or changes? Already have a case, mouse, keyboard, hard drive and screen. Build is for a family member, 1080p Gaming PC.

Might change the processor to a K variant to overclock later. Any idea when the cheaper model motherboards will come out?

Thanks.

1st quarter 2018 is supposedly the time which means March, maybe early April. Rand is also on form.

So my motherboard decided to die on me so I am busy updating my PC. What are your guys thought on my picks so far.

MSI ATX Motherboard Motherboards Z370-A PRO

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Desktop Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15)

Intel BX80684I78700K 8th Gen Core i7-8700K Processor

Been reading many reviews about CPU coolers and I can't decide between these two coolers

Corsair Hydro Series H115i PRO RGB 280mm Radiator Dual 140mm ML Series PWM Fans Advanced RGB Lighting Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060032-WW)

Noctua D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 PWM Fans, Retail Cooling NH-D15S

Which cooler would you guys pick? I am leaning towards the Corsair H115i as I have the H75 and it hasn't given me any issues.

Ponder will appear shortly to assist. Lol

And i think his 1st question will be what do you intend to use it for?

My 2c in respect of GAMING

The g4560 is a newer chip but 2 cores with hyperthreading.

The i5 is 4 actual cores. But its 4th gen vs 6th on the pentium.

So ull probably get the pentium new and the i5 2nd hand

My understanding is that between generations there isnt much in it as far as processing power goes.

Also i understand that four actual cores is better for gaming.

That said. Ive seen plenty videos that recommend the pentium as good value for budget gaming builds.

Hello

I'm trying to put together a pc and still learning the ropes. Please tell me which CPU is better and why. Do you only look at clockspeeds, cores etc. Or are there other factors to consider as well?

https://ark.intel.com/products/97143/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G4560-3M-Cache-3_50-GHz

and

https://ark.intel.com/products/75036/Intel-Core-i5-4430-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz

Thanks

Depends on the application and what you using it for. The 4560 has slightly better single core performance while the 4430 is better in multicore performance. look at benchmark videos comparing the two.

What will the pc be used for, which components do you have to buy and what is your budget?

Thanks. Gaming mostly. Mid-range PC. Just need CPU and motherboard. So I'm trying to figure it out.

Im very happy with the outcome

Keen to upgrade my 5 year old machine too...

0 gaming but 3 monitor setup and lot's of streaming both locally and on the internet, Kodi, Plex etc Seems to be quite CPU intensive when over the internet.

I would like to salvage as much of the hardware I currently have but it's all over 5 years old so might need to replace it.

Current setup:
CPU: i7-3770k
MOBO: Sabertooth Z77
GPU: AMD HD7970
PSU: Corsair AX850
Cooler: Noctua DH14
Chassies: Corsair 600T
Ram: G.skill 2166 DDR3 16gb (2x8)
SSD primary: Samsung 256gb 850pro I think

New setup:
CPU: i7-8700
MOBO: MSI Z370 gaming pro carbon
GPU: retain AMD HD7970
PSU: retain Corsair AX850
Cooler: Retain Noctua DH14
Chassies: Coolermaster CM693 (690ii) (although I could probably retain the 600t)
Ram: retain and add G.skill DDR3 1866mhz 16gb (2x8gb) - is the speed differential going to be problematic?
SSD primary: retain Samsung 256gb 850pro I think :crylaugh:

TIA

Upgrade your cooling and overclock the CPU instead of upgrading?

Considering streaming, I was just wondering why not a 1700x instead? The i7 8700 is between 1700x and 1800x in price on wootware.
(As streaming is mostly the more cores, the better)

Upgrade your cooling and overclock the CPU instead of upgrading?
And this. :)

You won't be able to retain the ram AFAIK. You're gonna need DDR4.
Ryzen Zen+ is coming out next month. Might be worthwhile to have a look at it.

Also, if you delid (Rebeltech does this) and overclock your PC, you won't notice much if any difference in games between your processor & the 8700.

You no fun!!!

Noctua is a damn fine cooler! What would you replace it with? Nothing bigger than the H100i fits in the 600t and what sort of a performance boost would I get from a 'safe' OC? 10%?

Yeah, AMD never came into the equation but maybe... So which MOBO then? ASRock X370 Taichi AMD AM4 Socket Ryzen ATX Desktop Motherboard. Could work...

Argh no man, RAM is so bloody expensive these days!!

I know

ugh, just read 0 gaming.

Still, I would overclock your processor first unless you just after that new shiny feel.

BTW - Have a look at this cooler: https://www.wootware.co.za/nzxt-rl-krx62-02-kraken-x62-280mm-all-in-one-liquid-cpu-cooler.html
https://youtu.be/L-jMOTYWCgU?t=424

You don't have to change your cooler thou. Noctua is great. I have my 2600k running @ 4.6ghz on an air cooler.

I was on my phone and didn't see you mention the cooler, if you got your CPU delidded you could probably overclock it to 4.8GHz easy with the same temps you have now at 3.5GHz.

But like the other folks said, for what you want to do is throw more cores at it not necessarily more speed.

Yeah.

Biggest advantage to updating to Ryzen or intel 7000+ series is the HEVC/VP9 hardware accelerated decoding.
Not sure with what mobo to pair up, haven't built a Ryzen system yet.

I'd message wootware and ask, https://www.wootware.co.za/msi-x370...herboard.html#product_tabs_description_tabbed should be fine from a quick Google, also has a USB C port.

With gaming not being involved, an X370 board is overkill...B350 will do fine (from around R1500.00-R2000.00).

Yeah, I suspect it is but I typically upgrade once every 5 years so is it not a bit more future proof than the B350?
