The Premium PC Games For Free Thread

Totally random post, but since GOG had a Syndicate giveaway, what type of Gauss Gun is this?

Just a bit of info, GOG didn't randomly give Syndicate and Ultima Underworld away, it was a result of political EA bureaucracy,

point being, EA wanted it to go away because they deemed it not to be in player's interest any more. Well, it is to what it boils down to. It is not the first time EA would murder a single player game. Ubisoft is busy silently killing Might and Magic X Legacy. Never trust a single player game which requires server authentication and some form of hosted data node for whatever reasons like AI and whatnot, especially those which had some form of monetisation. We don't pay for games any more, we pay for its use.

Be happy for GOG's existence, though they have also screwed abandonware, so meh.

Paying for access not ownership :coffee:

itunes pretty much does the same, one day you have access to say lotr and the next it is gone. One of the reasons I've stopped "buying" movies from them and now I would rather just sub to vod and if it is not there then well I've done enough hoops and would rather backup the iso myself. As for games, well, gog was suppose to be ' pay to own ' not ' pay to access '. Yet another reason post cyberpunk I will not be supporting them.

What do you mean 'pay to access'? GOG has always been 'pay to own' and that hasn't changed.

Since this isn't the thread to have that discussion, I am going to quote GOG's User Agreement once,

USING GOG SERVICES AND GOG CONTENT

2.1 We give you and other GOG users the personal right (known legally as a 'licence') to use GOG services and to download, access and/or stream (depending on the content) and use GOG content. This licence is for your personal use. We can stop or suspend this licence in some situations, which are explained later on.

You have the personal right to use GOG content and services. This right can be suspended or stopped by us in some situations.

2.2 When you buy, access or install GOG games, you might have to agree to additional contract terms with the developer/publisher of the game (e.g. they might ask you to agree to a game specific End User Licence Agreement). If there is any inconsistency or dispute between those ‘EULAs’ and this Agreement, then this Agreement wins.

GOG games might have extra EULAs (End User Licensing Agreement) for you to accept.

3. GOG ACCOUNT

3.3 Your GOG account and GOG content are personal to you and cannot be shared with, sold, gifted or transferred to anyone else. Your access to and use of them is subject to GOG’s rules which are set out here, as updated or amended when necessary.

Your GOG account and content are for you only – there are rules about how to use them (see opposite).

No, it is not pay to own, it is pay to access. GOG can take that away any time they wish, so you best download your game installers and backup it somewhere because bitching about it on Mybroadband when that time come won't give you your access to the games back. You abide by GOG rules, not your rules. Nowhere do they actually explain the license conditions, it is deliberately kept vague other than point 10,

10. OWNERSHIP OF GOG SERVICES AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS

10.1 GOG services including (but not limited to) their graphics, computer code, user interface, look and feel, audio, video, text, layout, databases, data and all other content, and all legal and exploitation rights regarding them are either owned by us or we license them from third parties. GOG content is owned by its developers/publishers and licensed by us. All rights are reserved except as we have explained in this Agreement. You may not use or exploit any part of the GOG services or GOG content except as explained in this Agreement.

No, you don't own any content on GOG.

All in all, these aren't digital marketplaces any more, it is subscription services. Funny, Valve argued in an EU court that they are a subscription service in 2019, but the court disagreed, ironically, another EU court agreed with Valve... Odd. Anyway, remember when Gabe Newell once said that people will always own their games purchased on Steam, haha, Valve's EULA today makes it clear that you own a license to use.

So, download your GOG installers to maintain access to a licensed copy.

Especially where you are based regionally, any technical argument you will try to make will be void.

Did they remove it from the Store or from peoples Libraries?

EA culled the games commercially, declaring it EOL, but they would have continued to hold the license. Hence, it wouldn't have been deemed abandonware. Yes, the games are old, and only hardcore loyalists’ players still play it, but it is an attempt at silencing the IPs, commercially killing it. GOG would have still maintained their license to host and distribute copies, but the games would have been delisted.

We’d like to inform you that, on publisher's request, Ultima Underworld 1+2, Syndicate Plus and Syndicate Wars will be delisted from our catalog on Monday, June 28th, 1 PM UTC.

For everyone who purchased the titles prior to delisting, they will remain in their GOG library.

Distribution licenses may also come to an end, when we don't know, and EU law kinda protects this, but ask good-guy Valve about this one, because it doesn't seem that they are championing consumer rights any more. All EULAs maintain that access rights may be suspended or otherwise stopped.

EA has done this to modern games, and so have other publishers. There are physically owned game copies which are unusable today. It is nonsensible and unethical. The only reason I brought it to this thread's attention.

Anyway, someone wants this discussion to continue, start a new thread about it. I am done here, want more premium games.

Only the store so I don't know what he's on about. Yes I know there is a difference between owning a game and a license and it's always been like this. But GOG has stated that you own the games and unless there's a legal requirement they won't remove them from libraries. That is also all I want to say on this so if he's on some crusade against GOG like some lately he can do so in another thread.

In any case these are still available till 3 September for free so better grab them while you can.

Bottom line, these are (were) premium games and can be had for free as there is no fee involved.

That satisfies all criteria for this thread.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is invited to go tell us all about it in another thread and stop spamming this one with inane nonsense.

It's been free for almost a year already

Off topic, but I bought a spare copy of Rocket League for Steam before it became free to play on Epic. I had assumed that the copy I'd bought was pretty much worthless unless you wanted to have it on your steam profile.

For whatever reason the Steam version is selling online in key form for $200+. Does anyone know what makes the Steam version so sought after?

This has always been the case. Even from back in the 80's games EULA only gave you a right to use. In fact this is the case with all software, that is why Linux and opensource became such a big deal cause its free, not like in beer but in speech, so you could in fact "own it" and change/fix it like you would a car.

Bar that, great Link was an interesting bit of information.
