Giving them an opportunity to either return to their home and attempt to re-enter legally, without prejudice,
This is fine.
or to apply for the relevant visa from within SA,” said Ngwenya.
No, this is not fine. Cause they wouldn't try to apply if they came illegally in the first place, meaning that the problem won't get solved.
“Why should foreign nationals not be given amnesty when home affairs does not have their act together? Just like driver's licences, a punitive approach risks lumping the innocent along with those who had no intention of following the rules.”
So illegal foreign nationals should get free passes because of ANC incompetence? How about no?

She said the proposed policy offered practical interventions which include:

  • implementation of an advanced migration registry system to properly document all migrants when entering or leaving the country;
  • move to a points-based skilled migration system as opposed to a skills-demand system, as the points-based system has proven to be more attractive to aspiring skilled migrants in other parts of the world;
  • explore the economic cost vs benefit of an e-verification system that would enable employers to check the work eligibility status of potential employees;
  • blacklist officials who have been found guilty of involvement in migration corruption and fraud from working for any state agency or government department and lay criminal charges, and;
  • introduce a trader’s permit/visa for all other African countries.
This is also ok. But the amnesty isn't going to work.

Earlier this week, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba cautioned South Africans against taking the law into their own hands.

He said South Africans were right to be frustrated about illegal immigration but their anger was misplaced and should be directed towards the ANC.
“Home affairs has failed for decades to issue documentation to people who qualify. Our borders are not protected, and points of entry have created a free-for-all, where goods and people pass into SA without regulation. Who is to blame? The ANC, not foreign nationals,” he said.

Mashaba also told citizens to stop making foreigners scapegoats.
This.

Ok so I went to check Holomisa's post on Twitter and here's my takeaway from it,

The opposition:
  • all agreed that the motions of no confidence should be held by secret ballot.
  • all agreed to set up parliamentary ad-hoc committees for the July unrest, our problem with state security and the state capture commissions' findings
  • wants a meeting with Rama and the Speaker
  • condemns Home Affairs for allowing an influx of illegals but also condemns the likes of operation dudula as well

Points 1 and 3 will be interesting to see tho. Seeing that the opposition agrees on a secret ballot for the motions of no confidence and they want a meeting with Rama himself.

I don't see them discussing anything related to the motions with Ramaphosa, it would be improper.

Wouldn't make sense to talk about his motion, perhaps about the cabinet motion? Would be weird anyway to just call a meeting and say to Rama, "hey bruv, we are going to vote against you in the motion against you, have fun" and just leave afterwards.

But still, I wonder what they will actually discuss with him and if they will perhaps try to convince him to rally support against the Cabinet within the ANC (which has given him many problems, so I don't think he'll exactly be hyper-defensive of them, especially Sisulu)?

It could be beneficial for all parties to flush a few turds down the bowl.

I'm actually curious to see how the cabinet motion will play out. If it will actually be the first motion of no confidence to succeed in SA.

The motion against Rama however is dead in the water anyway.

Even the cabinet one, if the opposition wants to discuss such things it's best they do that with their counterparts in parliament, that would be the different party caucuses, Cyril agreeing to discuss the cabinet motion would look like negotiating with the opposition in the corners about his cabinet, it won't paint a good picture politically, that's why I don't see him entertaining anything to with that.

The state of the country on the other hand is a fair discussion to have so I think it will most probably be about that.

Yeah, I agree but I think that conversation will eventually spill over into the Cabinet topic. Since the Cabinet does have a direct influence on the state of the country.

The thing is also without the minutes of the meeting we won't know for sure what they discussed. They could even plan a "grand coalition" for all we know.

So yeah, looking forward to 30 March.

I wonder if she's actually going to do this:
"I want to work with community leaders across South Africa to harness their potential to realise change. It is, therefore, time for me to take a break from formal politics to get back on the ground and to help real change-makers make our country better," she said.
or if this is another Baloyi-style move from DA to ActionSA?

Would be sort of hilarious to see another Baloyi-style move.

I'm largely expecting a month or two and announcement of joining ActionSA...

ActionSA still have a very large problem in my head, and it feels like Herman and his love for the EFF... They are doing lots of the other things right, but they still have a "cult-like" association with Herman and they need to break that. If they get that right they do stand a good chance of growing and eventually replacing the DA in this country in my opinion.

Perhaps. It's fine if they agree or acquiesces with EFF here and there (on sensible things, mind you) but I agree with you. Sometimes they give the vibe of being too comfy with EFF.

They do have the potential of knocking DA out of the official opposition spot, but they should be careful of COPEing themselves...

100% agreed... No issues with the EFF and ActionSA agreeing here and there and working together on sensible things, that is normal in politics.... its that image of being too comfy with the EFF (if not actively pushing the EFF into places they have no right to be given their past behaviour)

It sounds like Maimane's OneSA, there's a lot of potential in that as communities becomes more and more disillusioned with party politics.
