The Sony X1 Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Has anyone got this? Looks pretty awesome, but i havent had a good experience with screen protectors, so gonna be careful of what i get for my x1

EDIT: on reading more on this... how is meant to work on the X1? it has movable parts... i understand the iphone, but the x1 kinda has a qwerty keyboard on it, and it kinda slides out?
hence, has anyone got this?

I havent tried any of these, but i use those generic plastic covers you can buy and you just cut it fit the screen (ie. similar to the plastic on like when you first receive your screen) But that is just the mean time while I hold out for a good case to be released. Apparently Cellucity is getting a case in, the next week or so, so gonna see how that case turns out.

Think Tsponge has more knowledge here, give him a shout!!

So I format the card, switch off and then take battery out, then switch on holding volume down, coloured screen appears but says cannot find image even after copying the file to the card???
Any ideas?

we talking rom here marine? did you relabel the file?

more details please.... are you doing the R2A generic UK? if i remember correctly you
already did the hardspl when you flashed the vodacrap off ???

You guys are making me think about the doing a hardspl and putting in the new UK ROM... BUT... what about warranty issues? are there any?

Forgive me if this has been said already, but.. spoke to a SE Techy on the phone and in relation to your Data connection (hsdpa, 3g, grps), it doesnt matter is the connection is active (in comms manager), or not with regards to your battery... it only uses alot of battery when the connection is working... like browsing, or checking email etc...

any thoughts?

ROM UPDATE:

From http://xperiancers.com/

Xperia Software Update

We’ve had a couple of comments on the site regarding a sporadic Bluetooth problem with the phone. This is just a quick post to say that as far as we can see, they are fixed in the new ROM which you can download from the Xperia support site.

The new ROM (version 1.02.931.3) speeds up the load time, updates the 3D drivers, adds a Google search bar to the default home screen and fixes the problem with Bluetooth. (note: as we’ve not had any problems with Bluetooth here, I can’t guarantee that this is right, but according to reports elsewhere, it is.) For a fuller review of what the software update does, check out this fansite for the most in-depth review of the software changes.

First post - howzit okes ...

Just thought I'd let those of you know who are still wondering about the new ROM that I've just done the update using the X1i_GENERIC_UK_R2A.nbh file (obviously renaming it to Kovsimg.nbh and putting it on the MicroSD) and I did not have to use the hardSPL method.

I'm on MTN and it has just requested to set up the device for my Network :).

(I'm literally typing this as I go)

I'll report back a bit later, but so far it seems good!

I.M.O. the techy is both right and wrong. Think about it this way, if your phone shows a 3G icon then it is because it has detected 3G capability in the area. It detects this (to the best of my knowledge) by broadcasting a short "query" packet and if it gets a response then it knows it can use 3G. this means that while the connection isn't continuously on it does "turn on" for short periods when broadcasting those "query" packets. So yes the techy is correct in the sense that the battery will be uneffected when 3G is not in use, but it would be in use periodically when broadcasting those "querry" packets. Disabling 3G completely stops it from making those queries.

Please note that this is my understanding and i am open to correction. You did after all say "any thoughts."

well the proof is in the pudding.... turn off the 3g and notice the diff.

why do apple also state that by turning off 3g on iphone you increase batt life???

hey marine, looks like you came right. your thoughts???

makes a huge difference you turn off 3G. all my previous windows mobile phones were like this.

Anyway, picking my X1 up on saturday, whoohoo!

already ordered my Martin Fields screen protector and Bodyguardz case protector. Can't wait.

nice... can i ask from where you getting those items from?

I hear you guys... it does indeed make sense...however, i use the phone alot when i am out of the office... so its a bit frustrating turning the 3g on and off... isnt there a way the phone can connect to 3g, do what it has to do, then automatically turn it off when its not being used?

Hi Guys

Apologies if this coes across as a dumb question...

When you do the ROM upgrades, do you browse the xda site from your phones and download and install directly, or do you browse from your PC and copy & run the "setup" file to your phones.

Whats the best way to go about the entire process?

I might be wrong, but i did, i think you have to hardspl you phone 1st... that a file you just run on your pc... which is this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=431218

EDIT: By the way, i did mine yesterday... and put the UK R2 rom on... WoW... big difference, for me anyway... no one responded to the warranty issue... does this affect my warranty i have with vodacom?

hardSPL

Hi NickZA & BaldBoy,

As I mentioned, I did not have to do the hardSPL part. I just got the new ROM (it's rather big), extracted it, renamed it and placed it on my Storage Card. Then you restart as follows:

1. Power off
2. Remove battery (about 5 sec should be good)
3. Re-insert battery
4. Hold in volume-down
5. Hold in Power button
6. Screen will then come up with the multi-coloured bootloader et voilà :)

It might not work with everyone. If it doesn't, you need to do the hardSPL. Seeing as I got my phone around the same time as everyone else, I was sure we'd have similar versions though :D

Jaffro, how is the new rom for you, without doing hardspl...

Main things i have noticed are:

1. boot up speed quicker
2. the device is more responsive... from pressing the x panel to opening and closing apps...

those are the two main things i noticed anyway... ithink there was a difference inthe media panel... not 100% as i have only had the phone since sunday...
Also, i never had the google panel... now i do... :) not that i use it.

There is also a google search bar in the main panel... i dont use that panel though...

The phone is just generally better... :)

Well the main thing for me is that they've fixed that annoying dismiss message after you send an SMS. It always kinda got stuck even though you pressed it.

I agree with the speed of the device - tonnes better!

My only main gripe with this phone is the fact that it doesn't come with a Navigation application that you can just pay and go. Nokia does it - in fact I think all the major phones sold with GPS ability has some form of reliable installed Navigation. I wouldn't even mind paying the license! Very irritating ...

Oh and Wayfinder is useless ...

I wish they could've updated the SPB Shell though :(
