The Tattoo Thread

So how do I go about finding a decent artist in my area of residence? I live in Roodepoort, work in Sandton.

Its also weird for me because I can do the art on paper/digital myself, but can they use that or what?

I know of artists that will. It however should be a high enough resolution.

Looking good! Maybe some "metallic" colours, i.e. either copper (brown-yellows) or iron (grey colours)?

Slowly getting covered. 1/2 sleeve on left arm, 3/4 on right arm (still in progress, 9 hours in so far), right rights/side done. Starting my flash leg sleeve at the end of March at the SA tattoo convention with my first piece of flash from Nicholas Mudskipper from Tomb Tattoo. All other work by Ross at Handstyle in Mellville.

Left chest panel, extension of left arm and left ribs are all planned, as is a full back piece. Just need the cash and time to get it all done. Leg sleeve will be filled up as I get more flash.

Left 1/2 sleeve:

If you want good tattoos, you don't find "a decent artist in my area of residence", you find an artist that suits your preferred style and does the type of work you are into.

First hurdle I guess though is understand or figuring out exactly what your style of tattoo is. I'm into traditional/neo-traditional tattoos so I found a shop that specializes in that style. I've built up a very good relationship with my artist and the other guys in the shop and have complete faith and trust in my artist. I can give him a brief of what I want and know that he will pull through. At the end of the day he/she is an artist and you as a client are merely the canvas, with a little bit of say and leverage on the design of course.

Well that's if you're a true tattoo collector and see it as art. I think this is very much the mindset in the traditional/neo-trad scene where we "collect tattoos" as you would buy pieces of art, maybe not so much with people that just want a tattoo or 2.

Yeah, want to get some highlighting and yellow along the purple pipe to make it pop. Just so expensive

Charge by the hour, 700 for colouring at the moment. It's very cheap, should be 950 but I'll be going there a few times. But this piece has been worked on by 4 different artists over the years. Only the chest piece was one artist, arm is all a cover up
