then i went and changed summing, and it wouldn't even go past "Ip Address: failed"

I recently went over to Ubuntu. I had no help getting Xbox LIVE running under ICS. So I figured it out and post it on ubuntuforms.org.

OK I figured it out!!!

Here is what you do:

1) Go to the terminal and type:

sudo get-apt install firestarter

2) Once it has installed, exit the terminal

3) Go to "Applications" > "Internet" > "Firestarter"

4) When you first open Firestarter, it provides you with a"Wizard".

5) Select your device that connects to the internet (in my case wlan0)

6) Check the box where it says "IP address is assigned via DHCP"

7) Click next

Choose the wired network adapter which is in your PC/laptop and check the box that says "enable internet connection sharing"

9) Save settings and start firewall

AND NOW:

Make the wired network adapter's IP settings as follows:

IP: 192.168.0.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0

leave the "gateway" open.

Save your settings.

AND THEN:

Right-click on the Wireless Connection icon and go to "Connection Information". Here you must find the Primary and Secondary DNS addresses... write them down.

Go to your PC that you want to share the internet connection with and do the following:

1) Make it's wired network adapter's IP settings as follows:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Now type in the Primary and Secondary addresses you wrote down earlier.

TADA!!!

Tested this on Xbox 360 as well as Desktop PC - Have fun.

It works on all ICS setups, just select the correct corresponding network adapters. Hope this helps someone who wants to do XBL in Ubuntu.
 
I have a question about the new Xbox 360 arcades based on the jasper chipset. I know that are die shrunk and less likely to RRoD, but it could always happen. Now these new models have 256mb of built in memory instead of memory units from what I've read. If one of them RRoD's and you try and swap out, what happens to all your save games and other stuff?
 
The 256 MB internal memory are there primarily for NXE and future system updates. Arcade units still ship with an external MU.

Thanks, that was bugging me for a while.

Most sites I checkked said that you get the internal memory instead of the memory card.
 
How do I watch mkv movies on my Xbox 360?

Movies in mkv format are not supported by the Xbox 360 but you can demux and remux the video and audio from mkv files into a supported container like mp4. The downside to doing this is that you're limited to 4GB mp4 files (limitation of the 360) so you have to split files larger than 4GB if you want them to be recognised. Also, if the mkv file has audio in 5.1, that's gonna have to be cut down to 2.1.

When I initially started converting mkv to mp4, I used to do everything manually, the demuxing, converting, remuxing etc. You don't need to do that, try using one of the following pieces of software, it does the whole process for you and both are specifically written with the 360 in mind.

XenonMKV has a better UI but both do a good job.

If you want to keep your 5.1 audio and not have to split your files if it's bigger than 4GB, your best bet would be converting the file to WMV HD, but be warned that takes AGES! mkv to mp4 is the quickest way of watching your HD movies on your 360. Hope this helps..
 
Can anyone help me watch .avi's on my xbox? It says something about a media update
P.S. i am not connected to xbox live but i managed to get the NXE update via USB flashdrive.

you have to be connected to xbl to get the media update, it doesnt come with NXE.
 
ok my brother just phoned me and said while he was playing the lights flashed red for a second and then went back to green is this something to worry about or not. Im not sure if it is the old model or a newer one but the manufacture date was Aug last year (if that helps at all)

oh its arcade btw

This can be a 5-10 minute job if you get your ducks is a row early. Without an official SA Live! region there are two things you will need.

1. A foreign postal code
Pretty easy, just google for one in the country you want (eg NW1 5LR is Madame Tussauds in the UK)

2. A Windows Live ID for the same country
(hotmail/passport/MSN Messenger account)
Either set the country and locale of an existing account to your country of choice, or even easier just create a new one during your Xbox Live account creation (but write it down!!!)

The important difference here though is that the 360 integrates with MSN messenger, so if you want to access your existing contacts list you need to make the necessary adjustments.

Personal preference here really, US accounts get a bit more content and points are cheaper, but UK content seems more relevant to SA as they're in the same "release zone" as us (ie we get games at the same time). Also SA is occasionally eligible for EU competitions.

Okay then what?
Eezy peezy, hit join xbox live and fill in all the info as required when required, the last little twist is only create a Live Silver Account. It should give you a free months Live gold anyway (can anyone confirm for the Arcade SKU? /*confirmed - thx Nduimiso*/). Trying to go gold from here requests Credit Card details which will fail to verify because it'll use the postal code you just entered against your actual address which will obviously fail.

The next step to getting Live gold is to head over to one of the following:

(I have used all 3 successfully)

to purchase a subscription and of your choice and some Microsoft points (The Live! currency).
Note: Live! subscriptions are region free (ie just buy the cheapest), but Microsoft points are region locked so make sure to buy ones for the locale you selected earlier.

From there, jump in and enjoy. Buy Castle Crashers. Don't ask just do it ;)

Of First of all, having endless issues with network and Xbox live connections. I have an Xbox Arcade, and tried setting up to connect to my home network this weekend and be able to access xbox live

Used an old livemail account and set it to an Oxford postal code in Uk. I changed my locale on xbox dashboard to UK.

Ok so network and connection issues aside, ( will discuss in another thread) I managed to connect to the net finally , went through live account creation and first time it got bounced saying locale was incorrect. Tried checking some things and now I am told I cant use that particular type of email acount to create an xbox live account. Are xbox live email accounts no longer able to be a web based email account?

Any ideas? Shoudl I try create a new hotmail or gmail account? Or do I need to get an international email account somehow?

I think your Hotmail/Live account has to be a .co.uk adress.
A friend of mine set up my XBlive and he said i must create a UK hotmail/Live account to use it.
 
Hi

I cant play certain movie file types etc on my xbox 360. Are there codec updates that one can install?

I already did the update via xbox live.

update question. dl the file compressed from internet to laptop, unzipped then copied to dvd, put in xbox =nothing, anything im doing wrong?
 
fixed, stupid me, didnt transfer the folder and files, just the files, this new update is quite nice.

you got to look through the different sections on the dash to find the different updates, Zune marketplace and Sky TV is under videos, Last FM is under music (i think) and facebook is under something else, but they should all be on the main dash were all the highlights are listed
 
happy new years to all.... i was wondering why the controller switch off automatically while you playing games? cause my controller and my 1 friends controller does it batteries full refreshed the wireless but it still goes off. what can i do to fix this issue?
