When Zuma started the US dollar index was only around 73 ,which now sits at 95. The US dollar index ,is the indication on how strong the US dollar is.

So we need the dollar to weaken by quite a bit before we can go back to that times.

Remember.. they still have a Trump card which could weaken it more

Compared to the Euro:

Still 50% weaker than it was a mere 5.5 years ago.

Whatever Trump ends up doing, he would struggle to come anywhere close to the lasting effects that expanding the money supply four-fold in the last 8 years will have

this has been my criticism of measuring our GDP in dollar terms but proponents of measuring our GDP in dollar terms just can't seem to understand this

Question to me is whats driving this change. As far as I can tell none of the underlying fundamentals have shifted (in fact they've worsened @ growth)...so I guess this is an effect of the election?

Its factors external to South Africa IMO. All our politicians have to do is not do something stupid to scare off the money flowing in looking for higher yields in emerging markets

Rand being discussed on Bloomberg at the moment

summary: people basically looking for yield and searching for it in emerging markets

If the rand is doing so well why are stocks doing so badly?

The top companies on the JSE operates offshore so their profits are linked to the exchange rate.

Anglo, bat are two examples of companies hit hard by the stronger rand for instance.

Thoughts on impact US data will have?
Think back up to 13.50-13.70 range for a week or so if it's all good.

Finally 12 if it's horrid.. If just for a moment

I see the data shows little has changed, so nothing standing in the way of further Rand gains IMO. We will see as US markets get into full swing
