Realistically, Akani and Wayde are out last hopes for medals after that joke performance from the 7s team yesterday.

I know getting there is an achievement itself, but considering its the biggest team we have ever sent to an Olympics, its all a bit flat for a country that is quite in to its sports.

One wonders what effect a protracted lockdown has had on our athletes preparation? The team sports seem to have been quite adversely effected.

I doubt the crackdown had any effect.

Other countries also had crackdowns, some even harsher than SA's. I do understand clutching at straws is one of SA's many national pastimes, but I don't see it as relevant.
 
We have a few more medal chances before we go into the track & field:

Tatjana Schoenmaker (200m breast-stroke)​

Chad Le Clos (100m butterfly)​

 
Schoenmaker gets another Olympic record! :love: Awesome stuff. Almost broke the world record too.

Favourite for gold in the 200m.

SA's Corbett also won her heat and is through to SF

We have a bit of a chance in golf too I think.

I think Schoenmaker will definitely win a medal, Chad maybe. And maybe some other swimmer too

You do realize that being a "pro" sportsman means jack squat in SA, unless tennis, golf, rugby etc? Even then income and sponsorships are limited, hence why we see top rugby players play in Europe, Japan etc?

Being a pro surfer, based in SA - you must be thinking she drives around in a bentley with a pension @ 55. More like, here is a free surfboard and a few billabong shirts.

Its well documented that sponsors are so kak athletes in various sports have to carry the cost of their own trips to compete internationally for SA.

Doesn't detract from a stupid comment made about that R350. Maybe she has actually earned enough! Never thought of that one.
Anyways, she has outlined why she retired on her FB page. Give it a read.
 
Any idea if the athletes receive money for an Olympic record and if so how much? I know World records have a decent payday so just wondering

They don't earn anything from the IOC/Olympics themselves. It is a BS racket if you ask me as there is huge money in the Olympics.

The athletes rely on their athletic associations (in our case, SASCOC would provide some sort of reward) and personal sponsors and endorsements in terms of being rewarded for their achievements, so money will vary wildly depending on how wealthy your country and athletics association is.

Hidlyin Diaz, who won the Philippines their first gold medal in their history, was promised US$660,000; a house and a plot of land by the president. Wealthy Filipinos have also said they will contribute to rewarding her for the achievement.
 
Ahh yeah remember SA athletes got money the previous olympic depending on there medal although there was the whole fiasco with Sunette Viljoen. I would just assume you earn prize money if you break a world record although not sure who will pay it.

Luckily the next Olympics is in France. Same times as SA so we'll be able to watch everything live lol

Agreed Mbalula is a total joker. Must say I have more respect for Neetling & Schoeman who turned down the oil money 15 years ago but if it literary becomes a case of non payment / survival I fear many SA athletes might compete for different nations in the future.

Schoeman's 20 million reasons to leave SA

Excited for the Golf and Swimming tomorrow, Tatjana in a league of her own and hopefully Chad can shape he looked strong in the first 100m and he is very good under water
 
Corbett won SF1 and Schoenmaker won SF2. Both move on to the finals :cool:

Schoenmaker is still the favourite for gold as she has the fastests times. Corbett gonna have to swim hard for a medal because there are faster swimmers.

Unfortunately for us the final is @3:40am tomorrow
