I initially bought mine (Co-Pilot) off TPB. It was so bad that I won't be spending my monopoly money on it again either!

I feel your pain, either they are equally good, or equally bad. I might be leaning towards the latter, but since Garmin is more "mature" in my opinion, if I was forced to choose, Garmin would be it, that said, I had Garmin for Symbian, and it was horrible.

For Xmas my wife wanted a new nav for her car so I went looking. I looked at the top TomTom and Garmin devices.
Ended up with Garmin because...
1. Garmin is more mature - as you say.
2. Garmin traffic updates are free whereas TomTom was an annual fee of R400 or R500 or something. The Garmin was a tiny bit more expensive but cheaper in the long run. Not sure how the Android devices handle the app license fees for these two. I purchased Navigon and cannot see anything related to annual fees or anything so assume it works just like the standalone devices.

I do miss it on occasion.

Going from a Nokia to Android, Ovi maps is one of the things i missed.
I found Ovi maps to be quite a lot better than google maps.

If reception was good everywhere Google Maps would be sufficient. Unfortunately that is not the case and I've had my fair share of problems. Downloading the maps for offline use doesn't work so well either. Best is to get a proper completely offline navigation app. It's money well spent. There is a good reason why such companies are still in business despite free Google Maps.

No, but most of the time there is reception. For some of us it is not worth the R400-R600 for the absolute best GPS solution, as the free alternative works well enough, and we don't need to use GPS that often.

Yes, just cache the area before you go into it. even satellite if you like
