TopTV takes off

It seems MultiChoice is not the only broadcaster that is concerned about the arrival of new subscription broadcaster TopTV -- the SABC is too.

Not that I'll be getting TopTV anytime soon, I'm keeping a very close eye on them for the next few months to see how their service pans out...

Jackie Rakitla, MultiChoice's head of corporate affairs, denied that the decision to launch DStv-Lite was meant to pre-empt TopTV's launch -- it was timed to coincide with the World Cup. "As you know, this is one of the biggest events in South Africa," said Rakitla. "We would like to contribute to the experience by providing access to great sporting entertainment." The World Cup will be screened on SABC.

Strangely enough, nothing in the DSts-Lite package provides any soccer advantage over DStv-EasyView, and EasyView comes in at R20 a month.

Like the article says, SABC is all you need for the World Cup viewing, which is available on EasyView, but yea, go ahead and deny that TopTV's launch had anything to do with it.

MultiChoice has 2,6-million South African subscribers in total, of which 41% are DStv Premium subscribers, 24% are DStv Compact subscribers and 13% are DStv PVR subscribers.

Those are the figures I was waiting to see.

So only 54% of NoChoice subscribers have a reason to remain.

The remaining 46% is on the smaller packages and would ultimately get better value for money going to TopTV.

I see a reason for NoChoice to get worried.

Do you have evidence that Multichoice have to pay SABC for every decoder sold?.... I was under the impression that they didn't and only had to pay SABC for any feeds they want, and possibly to hold the SABC Channels.

The retail stores pays a licence fee for every television in the store to the SABC but not for the decoders - you cannot view SABC without a television attached. Multichoice have refused multiple attempts by the SABC to provide their subscriber list to the SABC who want them to collect the TV licenses on behlaf of the SABC.
