Toyota 86

Drove one a few days back, I liked it actually. Felt it was a bit under-powered but the rear wheel drive status is pretty cool.

Go for it.

The 86 has a Subaru engine (mostly) and was designed to have low grip.
Why the drugs comment?

I'm not talking about Scott, I'm referring to the man Scott is quoting, go look at his comments you will understand my observation

Ye, it's a great car! But I am not so sure if you want to buy it brand new, the new price point on the 86 is quite jaw dropping, I would spend the time and find a good second hand car in the last model.

I've owned one. The current price is insane for it.

I wouldn't say it was designed with low grip...it can grip like snot if driven appropriately.

Rather it was designed with a drift positive weight distribution.

Jeepers cost almost R600K now - what the hell happened?! 100% inflation in 3 years :O
Edit: not available on the Subaru site at all. Wonder if they made a huge loss on them locally?

I've had some butt clenching moments, luckily it's easy enough rectifying some daunting situations due to rear wheel drive.

Still remains an awesome daily commute.

People are obsessed with power rather than a well handling car so I'm not really surprised.

They are, but this car has additional problems. It needed to have a higher quality interior to attract its target market of folks looking to save money on a sports car. As it is, it's only really a great car for people who are actually going to take it on a track and don't want to spend more, and that's a tiny market. My previous neighbour has an 86 and they had serious reservations about that decision.

Everything is relative, right. People were used to turbo charged hatches and then came the 86.
Personally I feel Toyota dropped the ball. Consumers were literally begging for a turbo charged version.

And to paraphrase that article, 5 years later they added 5kw and a new front fender. A real bamboozle right there.

At least it's not specc'd like an MX5:

Max power 118 Kw @ 6000 rpm
Max torque 200 Nm @ 4600 rpm

Looks sporty but with a family car engine. I think BMW 320i is similar.

One good thing that Nissan did with its Z cars is continuously try to add more power rather than sticking to smaller engines forever.

Is it possible to fit a tow bar on it?
or is it too low?

I really like the car, but i need a towbar for my bike rack

So, i got my 86, today i took my car for a service and notified that there is a recall on the car.
I searched a bit about the recall and found this:

I was wondering if anyone went through the recall process and can recommend a place that will do it properly.

Any Toyota should be adequately equipped to deal with it, I am sure they are all reading through the same recall and repair script.

I know they should be, but according to this article , some dealers overseas caused more damage.

I'd take it to a Subaru dealership for the recall, if they're willing. I would hazard a guess that the mechanics at Subaru would be more familiar with the scooby flat four engine than Toyota techs- but this is of course not to say it will definitely be the case.
