On Monday the 19th January my brand new 320GB Seagate 7200.11 Barracuda arrived. This was before I knew of the "potential" problem with them. So, I decided to try sell it off (originally for R450).

On Wednesday evening I spoke with a sole-trader I met on MyBB who deals with local computer hardware suppliers in Cape Town, offered him R500 along with my brand new (and still perfectly-working Seagate) in exchange for a brand new 320GB Western Digital. The offer was accepted and a trade was concluded.

The Western Digital drive arrived yesterday, bubblewrapped. I was asked if I'd like to inspect it and told that he hadn't inspected it yet, but is sure that it's fine. Naturally - excited to get back to my computer and install it - I just said that it's fine and that I'm sure it's perfect. I traded him the Seagate for the new Western Digital.

I got home, unwrapped the drive, put it in my chassis, plugged it in. Woohoo! I remember talking to a friend online saying how quiet the Western Digital was compared to the Seagate, and the Seagate was barely audible. About 30 seconds later I took that back and laughed saying, "Nevermind, it's louder than the Seagate" but it wasn't a "significant" loud so much as a ticking sound of the head moving.

I began installing Windows 7 Beta x64. The installation went slower than it did before, but I didn't pay this much attention at all. Windows loaded, I started installing the Windows updates, etc... And then of course, I had to restart for them to take effect. After rebooting there was a loud spinning sound which died down; during the Windows startup screen, it froze. Keyboard wasn't responsive - numlock, capslock, whatever - didn't work at all. So, I did a hard reboot. This time the drive span loudly and froze during the POST screen - freezing the computer again as well.

So, I contacted the seller and told him. First I mentioned that I would prefer a refund since this was complete crap and I'd prefer to have my old Seagate back - especially if I have to choose between WD reliability and Seagate reliability. Rather the devil I know. Plus, I liked my Seagate - had one for seven years that never acted up on me (still have it) - so I decided I was willing to wait for a firmware update.

He was unwilling to return the drive to me (even when I proposed paying him R200 and getting both the Seagate back as well as swapping out the Western Digital). He then made (what seemed like promises) that he'd get me a refund since the supplier agreed that if they can prove that it was mechanical failure, they would credit the seller and he'd credit me. The seller said he'd pick it up "Maybe Friday, but definitely Monday or Tuesday."

Fortunately, he came to pick it up today.

He phoned me at 11:00am telling me that the drive had been "chipped" and then later that it was more, "A point of impact than a chip."

Now, anyone who has ever seen me with my computer knows that I'm holier-than-thou around it. And when it comes to parts FOR my computer, even more-so.

The events after I was handed the drive by the seller were as follows:

  • Shook his hand; said farewell
  • Went back to my apartment, unlocked the door, entered, closed and locked the door
  • Placed the drive (still in its bubblewrap) GENTLY down on the mattress alongside my PC's chassis
  • Opened the chassis
  • Removed the drive casing
  • Removed the bubblewrap from the drive
  • Inserted the drive
  • Screwed the drive in (gently, but securely)
  • Returned drive casing to the chassis
  • Plugged in the SATA power and data cables
  • Closed chassis
  • Placed chassis back on the table
  • Plugged in power, monitor, peripherals

And the rest has already been stated.

When I removed the drive after discovering it was faulty, it was the same process. Gentle and painless and back in its bubblewrap IMMEDIATELY after removing it. So how it could've gotten a "point of impact" or "a chip" while being IN bubblewrap is beyond me. Unless it was always there before the drive was even handed to me and I never noticed it. Regardless, I did not drop it. At all. That much I can promise wholeheartedly and swear on my life, my beloved's life and my mother's life :)

So what do you all propose I do? Get away from the seller as fast as possible and return to a normal - reputable seller such as Take2/Sybaritic - or wait and see? To be honest, I really feel as though I'm being fscked around with. Especially when I get a call asking, "Did you know there was a chip in the drive? It looks like it's been dropped?" Like, yeah... Sure... I know about that - I obviously threw a drive I traded my R680 Seagate for along with another R500 against the nearest frikkin wall for kicks!

I'm not impressed. Especially since he told me, "It might have to be sent back to Western Digital, so we'll have to see what they say."

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. It's funny, your friends say, "Don't do it" but then you think you know better, and you put your trust in someone and this is how you are repaid?

Fan-fscking-tastic.

omf... Sounds like both you AND your fiance were robbed yesterday... :(

Is the drive meant to be brand new? i.e. Is he meant to have purchased it FROM THE SUPPLIER yesterday? Can you ask to see the original invoice?

If it has to get sent to Western Digital, it's going to take months. So something sounds fishy here. Aren't Drive Control the distributors ?

Don't ask me. I haven't a clue how this works. All I know is that he said he picked it up from the supplier yesterday, and that today he was taking it back to the supplier.

What really cheeses me off is that I even said to him - when giving him the drive - that it's, "Up to him" whether he'd rather swap the drive out and return it to me today or whether he'd rather refund me - in which case he'd deduct petrol money from the amount refunded and wouldn't have to drive all the way here again. I felt bad :/

Now? I'm just irritated that I seem to be blamed for this. What did I do?

And yeah... It seems that both my fiancé and I had the worst luck yesterday. Mine, unfortunately, isn't improving.

This sounds a lot like my notebook debacle...

Hopefully your troubles get sorted out a LOT faster than mine did.

Out of interest, shouldn't he have heard from the supplier by now what was happening?

Who was that woman that charlie82 suggested in my situation... ?

So you told him its perfect without actually checking the harddrive for any chips etc?

I said that I'm "sure" it's perfect - it's called optimism. Regardless, I didn't realise it was my responsibility to perform a prostate examination on an item sold to me by what I assumed to be a "reputable seller."

But to be blatantly honest, the way he describes it, it sounds like something I'm sure I would've noticed while/before putting the hard drive in? I can't help feeling that he dropped it AFTER he picked it up from me. Either that or it was dropped before and I was honestly too blind with excitement to notice. Sorry.

And even then - theoretically - were the drive "dropped" and there was no visible damage to be noticed. Would I be blamed for that as well?

Let's all hope... And I have no idea... Perhaps charlie82 will give feedback :D

1) Probably would have noticed physical damage when installing
2) In the even that physical damage was there BEFORE accepting, it still means that Lycanthrope was NOT the one who damaged it. Also, it is the seller's responsibility to ensure that the customer is aware of the drive's condition.

3) It was also the seller's responsibility to inspect the drive IN FRONT OF YOU when he picked it up for physical damage. Did he do that?

Nope. To be honest, I can't really blame him for that because I was guilty of the same thing when he handed me the drive :o

1)

2) I'd hate to be around you when you get your first 1.5TB drive :D

:D :D :D Was actually thinking of getting a 500GB-1TB drive for storage and backup and using the 320GB for installs (hence why I didn't go any higher.)

But for what it's worth - you should've seen me when I got my GTX260 :D I was over the moon :p

Oh, so 2 wrongs make a right?

Nonsense.

Heh... I suppose, but I don't think it's fair to blame him for something I'm guilty of too :( I guess he should've known better since it is his job. I guess I should've known better since it was the first time I bought something through him...

This is just a thumb suck on which specific WD drive you've got.. but the Shock resistance for these HDD's is usually pretty high

For their to be "impact damage" to the drive, you've got to have thrown it with a HELL of a lot of force
Shock
Operating Shock (Read) 65G, 2 ms
Non-operating Shock 350G, 2 ms

I agree. But the point is that I never dropped it or let it get "damaged" in any foreseeable way. It was not my fault - and this is something I'm adamant about.

I just want this over and done with. Right now I have no money, no drive and no valuable feedback - if any.

I just don't get it - one moment it's "Sure, I'll get you a refund if possible." Next it's "I'm only going to swap it out." Then it's "I'll get you a refund or swap it out, what would you prefer?" Now it's, "Oh, the drive looks like it's been chipped. But it's more a 'point of impact' than a chip." So which is it? What's the plan? What's going on?

Am I getting a drive today? Or Monday? Or Tuesday? Next week? The week after? Next month?

This is just... irritating. I never should've traded with him. And I never will again either.

Unfortunately, hindsight is 20/20...

The best thing you can do right now is concentrate on getting things sorted out ASAP.

The way I see it, you have paid for a product that you don't have. This other guy has pretty much been paid to take both drives off your hands for now.

And he should have provided feedback by now. Something just isn't right. Are you going to call him?

Yeah, I think at the end of the day, this is a learning experience to only deal with reputable shops/individuals.

He will have to do some serious talking to prove a "point of impact" chip.... since that would clearly have to be a non-operating shock point and need to be in excess of 350G for over 2ms...

I agree, of course.

Call him? Probably at 15:00. I don't know what to say to him though. Whether to get upset or remain calm. If I get upset he'll probably scrap the idea of doing anything on my behalf completely. If I remain calm, I'll feel like I'm being taken for a ride - which I already do.

That makes me really suspicious of him or his supplier(s). One of them must've dropped it or something. Or maybe it was damaged in-transit - I don't know. The only fact I have is that it wasn't my fault and yet I'm the one paying for it :(

And yes, ToxicBunny... I'll never deal with him again... I just assumed he was "well-known" around MyBB since one or two people have complimented him. I guess there's always a first time though, pity that I'm that.
