Ubuntu 8.10

Once you have Ubuntu installed, you can install KDE desktop by doing:

Code:
sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

It's quite a big download.

Then, in your login manager, you have a "sessions" option that you can use to change between Gnome and KDE at login

I must say even though KDE4 still needs work I have no regrets so far, the only issues I've had is that it does not include samba and disk&filesystems preference panes which KDE3 had but I'm happy regardless.

Now to take on Samba using the brute force method :)

 Thanks guys, it seems I have some learning to do, a lot of new terminology to get my head around....game on..:D

For interest's sake, you can replace "aptitude" with "apt-get":
sudo apt-get [install,remove, autoremove, ...]
sudo aptitude [install,remove, autoremove, ...]

Thanks, but that makes no sense to me yet, but soon..:o:D

As above with "sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop", aptitude/apt-get is the installer you use in the terminal. You will learn to love it soon enough.

If the terminal is still too scary just use the package manager and browse the repos. (applications>add/remove)

Love it already :D now it's just getting to know her better....

Enjoy it DDV TECH. Note to self imagine running this with touch screen:eek:

Imagine the day where our computer use a similar interface to the guys there in the new Knight Rider series. I saw a computer in Dubai where they already have that. Really amazing.

Hey now thats not a bad idea, I'll set one up later today on a ATOM processor, perhaps I can load a clip on to utube afterwards. ?

Dude if you get that right, guess who's coming to visit this week:D

It should not be a problem, I have all the drivers, I'll have to do some sort of build so I can transfer it to the cf card, but how hard can that be:D (last famous words) watch this space....:D
I have to go now, but will be back soon, enjoy

I'm having no luck with SAIX and klibido, anybody got it working? for NZBs or just viewing groups.

The newsservers are under a lot of stress atm. I struggle to connect too.

My HP laptop (8710w) now has the wlan issues sorted, but compiz is dog slow, using the nvidia 177 driver. This is strange as the card is a Quadro fx 1600 (8700gt chipset). A bit of a dissapointment :(

On my desktop machine, using a 7600GS card, i can enable wobbly windows, blur effects and everything runs really fast.

Open a terminal and paste the output of:
Code:
lspci | grep VGA
