Ubuntu 8.10

So is it worth installing this and which should I try first, the G or K?

IMHO I'd rather go for Gnome. Not because I prefer it, but rather because Gnome works a lot easier than KDE4.1 (There is a very big difference in user-friendliness between 3 and 4.1). KDE4.1 looks really great but that's about it.

Agree with froot, coming from KDE3 KDE4 still needs work but looks really good though.

Well for what it is worth, I have never used Linux, and I downloaded the .iso of 8.10 and ran it on my compaq laptop, in fact I am using it to post from Firefox nogal, It's flippen amazing I just poped in the cd, rebooted and everything is working , sound, wireless network, internet, to tweaking, just some set-up, but barely anything, and that with no Linux knowledge... If someone is looking for a OS, to do the basics, mail, web, office, then this is the way to go. I love it.

I am happy that you're happy... 8.10 really is quite wonderful. I'm also really impressed with the live cd. Works better than anything I've ever tried.

Man I was astounded, I have no benchmark to compare this other than windows, and I'm telling you, I feel like a kid on xmas, so much to explore and test, I'm doing a clean install on a HP laptop tomorrow, and I'm going to try the live cd on my main computer with duel core and 8600 xxx. I'll give some feedback as I go along...:D:D happy happy...:D

For sure man, I haven't been this exited about something computer related in a long time, once you start working with something every day, it loses some of the lustre, but this at least have brought some of the old shine back..:D:D

Welcome DDV my sis also converted today, she saw my KDE4 desktop and was like OMG I want that.

Got any pic's? ....not of your sister, but that will also be welcome, I'm looking for a screenshot of your desktop....:D:D

Where do I see what desktop I have, kde or gnome (sp)?

I found it thanks, its gnome, how do I change it to kde?

i think u can do it through aptitude... i would need to check for you tomorrow. Maybe some1 can help u by then but if i were to guess it would be sudo apt-get install kde (maybe u need to hit tab a bit and see what available).

Looks better in hi-res though.

You will need to install KDE, just use the package manager (add/remove I think) and search for kde.

I have Kubuntu but installed Gnome afterward yesterday using local only :)

Once you have Ubuntu installed, you can install KDE desktop by doing:

Code:
sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

It's quite a big download.

Then, in your login manager, you have a "sessions" option that you can use to change between Gnome and KDE at login

that pic looks so fedora are you using awn or cairo

kubuntu-desktop is quite big. But it includes everything it needs.

I must say even though KDE4 still needs work I have no regrets so far, the only issues I've had is that it does not include samba and disk&filesystems preference panes which KDE3 had but I'm happy regardless.

Now to take on Samba using the brute force method :)
