Ubuntu 8.10

Aqua_lung, i used to just use pppconf or is it pppoeconf, just go ppp and hit tab :P Its sooo easy, why bother doing it the other way even if it exists ?

pppoeconf is the best way to go as the console never gets it wrong.
Then just go to /etc/network/interfaces and change the names and also to /etc/ppp/peers and rename the connection(s).

Guys do you think downloading the DVD version of Ubuntu is better? or is it just a waste of bandwidth?

Waste. Half of the stuff you don't need. Just download the cd iso (preferably the alternate) and install apps as you want them, then save them for future use/ reintstalls. I backup my apt-cache every month or so and if I reinstall I download the minimum.

Great! Glad it's sorted!

For reference:
Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "<network_name>"

Cool thanks. The whole thing works fine now. I also installed kubuntu-desktop and the funny thing is that in Ubuntu, it runs both the KDE and Gnome network applets now. No worries though. Just looks strange. :D

Can we get some sound updates? Any one have the sound working out of the box on an HP/Compaq laptop ?

The wireless does work out of the box but if you use pppoeconf then it creates an issue not present in 8.04. It can be fixed by removing two lines of code as mentioned in this thread.

My sound works fine on my HP laptop. However it does get muted on each startup!? Double click on your sound icon and look for PCM. It might be on 0%, as will Main.

I haven't installed 8.10 yet. Will do so next month. I do not feel like reinstalling and reconfiguring the spam filters im using for my research. Sound is one thing i never got to work in ubuntu at all. Will try next month tho, and keep u updated!

Woohoooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!! my Nvidia 9600GT card is now working using the Nvidia drivers :D........finally!!!!!!

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Downloaded version 177.80 and installed by booting into 'recovery mode' and installed from there. Could not get the thing configured correctly under 8.04. Maybe it was the fresh install that did it?

My friend's 9600GT was working In June already on Ubuntu....

Yeah, I had the 9600GT working in 8.0.4 for months doing it manually, with 8.10 it installed itself using the restricted installer.

I need help...

Wireless works out the box on an acer laptop I'm installing it to, I can connect to the router without a problem, but when I setup a pppoe connection using pppoeconf it breaks my wireless, does not want to connect to the router anymore.

I had the same problem.
To fix, go into your console, type in the following:

cd /etc/network
sudo nano interfaces

Then place a # before auto wlan0 and iface wlan inet manual and the long line by your ppp conn. as follows or similar. This is what mine looks like.
###############################################33
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto local
iface local inet ppp
#pre-up /sbin/ifconfig wlan0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider local

#auto wlan0
#iface wlan0 inet manual
###############################################3

Then press Ctrl +X to quit and press "Y" to save when prompted. Then press Ctrl Alt Backspace to logout and log in again. If it does not work, reboot.

Froot you're a star!!! that worked.

This should be reported as a bug though. :(

Thanks.... but I'm not the one that figured out the solution to the problem when it was mine... thanks goes to him. I did think of it but did not try it then.

Yeah, it should be reported. I first saw the issue in the RC but yeah well... it's the RC.

I reported the bug and will see if they come up with a solution.

Thanks froot.

Only 2 things that I'm having trouble with now, Samba and a remote control App. Both of these were easy to setup in KDE3 but I'm having trouble in KDE4.

irKick was a KDE3 app but it's not available for KDE4. For Samba I'm using the Gtk Samba client but still need to try and can get my mac to see the folders.

KDE? Ooh.... not my strong point. I like Gnome too much :)
KDE4 is still unfortunately a little on the "underdeveloped" side and needs more work. That could very well be the reason to your struggling with it.
Irkick you say? Can't find it in my package manager. I will install Samba and try it from KDE4 when I log into it later today.
