Ubuntu bets on desktop sparkle

I do compliment the EU for saying one big FU to Bill Gates

why don't they make a Linux that can run every thing windows can out of the box free and faster, more stable and the list goes on? Does windows have a law that the apps made for them may not run on linux from the box and if so then wine is breaking that law and if not I want my Linedows OS!

You can buy a netbook that has exactly that. if what you want is email, internet, ipod (mp3 and m4a), digital camera, CD, DVD, video clips and openoffice.

for most people who do not play games i would think this is more than enough.

you can even setup a windows PC to run linux with the above with little hassle depending on the distro you use.

Yes but the freedom to use every thing is what I want :D I'm greedy ^_^
It would be really nice if Windows could start following the open source model. Just imagine, everyone would be able to run everything on every OS.... The Pirate Bay would go out of "business" (except for music/videos ) and we could all live happily ever after.... :D

Ain't gonna happen! :(

i always find it strange how people find the default OS look such an important thing.
A new login screen!?

You know when people have run out of truly creative ideas when things like that make the news.
It is like car manufacturer which go on about how many cup holders or storage compartment their new model has.
How can we distinguish this model from the previous one? Ohh, it has 2 more storage compartments!

I use both Linux and Windows and love them both. I like every new feature that is added. on both sides. :)

Hehe, I hope those screen shot's is not their solution to fighting windows 7.

Microsoft never stifled innovation.
Considering that people are working hard to try and bring out a better operating systems and browsers because of the grasp Microsoft has on the market I think they have been promoting innovation aggressively (be it in legal sector too hehe).

It's just a real shame that ubuntu has been lagging where it matters. And mostly in my opinion because of companies like Nvidia and ATI etc...
But, people are starting to work together, so maybe eventually we'll have an environment that's fair and open, operating systems that do amazing stuff because of the open initiaves taken by the people that work so hard on linux.
But allot of that can be attributed to Microsoft's hard push on the market so that people have a reason to fight harder.

If you're winning, there's nothing worth fighting for, but if you're on the loosing side of the battle, the possibilities become endless. Being the little guy is a promoting factor.

long live microsoft... and linux ... and apple...
Die SCO

Anyways, my post is not supposed to be smart and informed and well balanced. It's just my personal opinion about the whole situation on ubuntu taking the direction of a new look.

I heard Ubuntu will be as good as windows 7 when it becomes Zonked-up Zebra ?

Zonked-up Zebra???

90% of the users out there that hate Window's so much, are writing their moaning on this forum on their brand new Vista box or their old stable XP machine.

I'm still on XP for one reason.... BECAUSE IT WORKS!

I install anything on XP, and strangely enough.... it always seems to work. I have had the same installation on my laptop for three years now, and only once or twice had a hiccup with it... but always curable.

I don't know about you guys, but I choose my operating system for the software that I can run on it. Oh yes, please don't try and force openoffice down my throat...

I have XP SP3 and W7 64bit - both are excellent. But even something like Windows 2000 still has a few tricks up its sleeve that Linux cannot do, not even if they take it to release Lameass Lama or right down to Zonked-up Zebra.

Vista xp and windows 7 all work really well :)

I love vista 64 bit and i will be moving to win7 64 bit for sure :)
Linux is pretty cool to mess around with but the latest version of ubuntu i install looks really old and out-dated, someone mentioned i could make it look nicer, any tips on how i go about doing that?

Sure a nice looking OS is not the most important thing but when you go from vista to ubuntu you notice how old and out-dated it is really fast :), even xp looks horrible compared to vista :), win7 looks about as good as vista :)

I won't upgrade to 7 - no need and no new features of worth. My heavy duty system is my Xeon Mac and with it's 64 bit system and Leopard (although Tiger beats Win 7) I have no need. If Snow Leopard is faster, and it appears to be the case with improved multiprocessing for C2D and above class CPUs in 64bits (about 15% improvement, CF Vista/7 being slower than XP) then I may upgrade to that, but it will cost only about a thousand Rand at most, what's Win 7 Ultimate going to cost? R3000? If Snow Leopard shows no benefits,
I won't upgrade.

Anyway I feel sorry for Ballmer. He has not the leadership of Jobs. :)

haha....I love Linux..I really i do, and am quite gratefull for the work canonical is putting into the cosmetic sides of ubuntu, because I must admit the default ubuntu theme is dog....but if you go to gnome-look.org you will see that for some reason they chose the ugliest of the ugliest themes, so all they really need to do is create a new theme. (although I hope they are doing more than just designing an new theme, new tweaks could prove fun)
And secondly you win okes bashing linux should really just back of,you okes are quick to moan when we point out win's short comings, and really if in linux the only fault you can find is the cosmetics and the fact that it cant run your win binaries then I say well done linux/ubuntu. The main reason it cant run your win aplications is got to do with the uncle bill's closed kernel....and once again if you cant skin your desktop in linux, or is to lazy to learn how then you should most probably stick to the way fuglier windows xp (who ever created the default skin/wallpaper of xp must be executed)

Thats all good and well but remember some people are productive on their computers and do work. Therefor you need something that can actually run these productive type programs (all are windows based) and you need to be able to do it on affordable hardware.

Mole did you see windows 2000 and then windows xp, windows xp was a revelation when it came out and looked amazing.

Why you are saying someone should be shot for making xp look 10x times better than anything else at the time is beyond me, maybe you do not realize how old xp is.

what inspires anyone to spend the amount of money you spendt on your mac? or did your parents buy you it, or did you just win the lottery? Its an over priced system you are sitting on if you ask me, and you mac boys really are truely a different breed all together, this is a linux related thread where the debate is win vs linux and here you plop in just to tell is about your expensive little toy haha

ok oon that one you have a point haha

uncle bill's closed kernel....

Reminds of kernel Sanders with his secret flavor recipe of 11 herbs and spices that creates the famous "finger lickin' good" chicken.

But hey if you like home made toebies and all the different [-]distros[/-] flavours you can make with it then good for you, and remember, mommy, uncle Linus and prof Shuttleworth loves you lots :D

Windows Fried OS, its binary runnin' good
