I'm a little hesitant about upgrading, since I have a functioning, stable setup. Still, the linux-geek in me is *very* curious about Unity :D

I'm using 10.10 and there is no way in hell I'm moving to 11.04. I'm gonna move my desktop back to Arch so it can join it's little friend which is my notebook running Arch.

Not Just me I guess. First is my P3 Destop machine no longer working with the latest and greatest 9.10 last working version and that is still via updates. So that was retired for a laptop for the same media center role and desktop. Now my web + mail server will not keep DNS settings with Desktop installed. Looked everywere for help and either way, Network manager seems to just ignore your file settings and assume DHCP which clears resolv.conf (lovely). So it seems the best of both no more, removed all Graphical applications, which also means no Unity :). Now I can reboot and all my networking works with DNS settings preserved. That last part is today. On the weekend could not get my storage server to boot, it does not like something about EHCI which was never a problem with 10.xx. Oh no; I am bitting my fingers considering having to install windows on more than my gaming rig. Agggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Anyone had any sucess with installing Gnome3?

I'm seriously considering ditching Ubuntu and moving over to Arch.

Is it only me or is 11.04 the worst Ubuntu release in a long time? I wish they had used Gnome 3, it's so much better than Unity.

Hearing good things about Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 as well.

Very solid release. I took a while to get used to using rpm's, but once I got used to it, it was was smooth sailing. Their repositories are also quite extensive.

It's not bad or anything. It's just not all that different from 10.10 :)

Hi,

I'm new to linux. I intall Ubuntu 11.04 on Evo N050v this morning. Whenever I try to launch Synaptic Package Manager I get the following error:

"E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/extras.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

After formatting and reinstalling it worked but when I restarted the machine to make sure that everything was still working, I got the same error. Any ideas?

Not to sound bad or anything, dont grind your teeth on 11.04 rather use a long term support version of Ubuntu like 10.04 LTS.

As for you problem, hope someone else can help you.

Gnome3 will be available in 10.10 as I understand it.

Although I'm really keen to try it out in 11.04 :)

If you do end up trying it out make sure you install gnome-tweak-tool and gnome-shell-extensions* when you boot in for the first time. The lack of customization in Gnome 3 can be very annoying at first, especially if you used to Gnome 2 (customization whore).

A bit of google-ing suggests that it may be related to an incorrect/invalid software source...

Actually, just fixed the problem using:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
sudo apt-get update

All good now.
