Ubuntu Natty 11.04 Release

So my Ubuntu 11.4 install has crashed twice while in the "Classic - With Effects" mode. I am no running it in Classic with no effects to see if that sorts it out. tsk.

Got it working like a hybrid.

Feels better to me.

Must add, I miss my desktop cube.

Only issue I'm having is with the mouse, if an app doesnt support the new global menu and you full screen it then the mouse goes out of alignment by a row. However to solve this is simple just manually make it full screen ie stretch the window, thank goodness I only have 2 apps that do this.

I'm also considering diving back into KDE..... I used to use it ages ago, when KDE4.2 first came out, I hated it, but hey, it works :p

Well, I remember KDE 2.0 on my desktop back in 2000. It was workable then. It is magnificent now.

I wont lie, I gotta thank Unity for pushing me back to KDE... when KDE 4 first came out there was no support for it yet and I was bored and dissapointed. Now after a break and coming back to a fully featured KDE desktop... man.. Im glad I came back to KDE.

My desktop looks fking hot.

I'm also considering it.... and same situation as you - KDE 4 was an initial epic failure (looked good but was aweful), became nice, but I was already stuck to Gnome..... I'm not too fond of Unity right now.

Well, now a week since I've installed Natty, and this weekend I'm gonna uninstall; just not happy, and when switching to Classic, it just doesn't feel right.

It just doesn't feel as snappy/ or clean as before.

In all my years of using Linux I have not ever been so disappointed as I am with Ubuntu 11.04 and Unity. The usability and overall speed of the distribution is the worse than I ever seen in my life.

It was suppose to be easier for touchscreen devices, I dont see that happening when your GUI promotes the use of keyboards more than ever. Esp when trying to find an application that you dont use often. Its not even user friendly, I tested it with someone that is new to computer and it failed beyond believe so you cant say this is for people new to computers either.

Installing KDE.....

I would move away from any 11.04 *buntu distro at this stage, I have had some serious issues on my netbook with it and I'm sure I will see some issues on my wife's PC if I gave it a spin.
It is just broken, there are so many things that do not work properly and I have tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and now Xubuntu, so it must be a base problem.

* If I switch between networks the WIFI goes down, I have to rmmod and modprobe the wifi module for the network to work again.
* I have problems with stuttering flash videos (YouTube, etc.) and I use the netbook 80% of the time for this task. (Chrome, rekonq and firefox)
* Display acts up every now and then, the mouse jumps to random places, the desktops suddenly switch and whatnot.
* Ubuntu and Kubuntu is a bit heavy for the netbook, Xubuntu does not want to hibernate and suspend properly.
etc.

Eish, and 10.10 was such a gem...
I do not want to downgrade to 10.10 since that is just prolonging the inevitable, sooner rather than later I'll have to find an alternative, might as well start now. Arch is my last option, going to try a few in a VM and then make up my mind.

planning to go back when I have time as well. 10.10 was far nicer.

I've had precisely the opposite experience, 11.04 is awesome for me I'm a power user and have now mastered the Unity shortcuts and can't imagine now going back to a desktop without Unity. My laptop is a Dell Latitiude D630, which is a little long in the tooth already, so most probably explains why everything works properly.

I'm planning on installing 11.04 on my AspireOne netbook this weekend, holding thumbs it will be as pleasant an experience.

Just a few things that irritate. (like getting back to my computer after 10 minutes, working for a minute then the screensaver/login screen appears). Things are not as fast as they were with 10.10 for me either.

Good luck with that, that is the netbook I am using for testing. Aspire One 150. Its dog slow compared to 10.10

Somehow I am agreeing with MyWorld, it seems as the base is broken, even KDE sucks. Oh well so long *buntu, was nice knowing you, lemme know when you get back to being a working distro.

I am so irritated with this. Went through the hassle of upgrading and it turns out that you can't VNC into the machine if you havent disabled all effects, which means using the old desktop.

sigh

There are reports that the Linux kernel that 11.04 is based on has a power regression, with the system consuming between 10 and 30% more power than previously: <http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_kernel_regress2&num=1> and <http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_natty_power&num=1>

I was wondering if anyone here who has installed it on a laptop has in fact had shorter battery life?
