Am running 11.04. How do I get the normal menu when I click the button on the top left? I don't like this fancy one.

Finally Cap reset, now I can join the rest of the Unity world

Update: and no sooner and I wish I didn't

I can see where they going with it but its defiantly a work-in-progress Window Manager.

The application navigation should have had forward/back options with maybe a history somewhere.
The file Explorer at the bottom should have either stayed in the unity mode or just launched Nautilus on 1st click of the bar, now it just looks half baked.
There is no "Unity" in window navigation like min/max/close.
Customization of the bar clearly is not thought out, even from install I would just have placed LibreOffice icon, not one for every part of LibreOffice, and if I add an app by dragging it onto the bar it clearly shows me that it doesn't like it but having a grey icon instead of the colored ones.

As I go on I will probably find many more, I am actually going to load this onto a PC I am prepping for my maid that want's something to go onto Facebook as she uses her phone for browsing and Facebook. This will be interesting to see how someone new to computers, not the net, adapt.

KDE saved the day for me. From a buggy mess that looked like a child put it together, to a working, slick DE in under 5 minutes.

I am still on KDE on my Media Center, Just wanted to test Unity properly as Ubuntu is one of the most popular distro's out. But I must admit I think Mark is going to kill that with Unity which is a pity, because I really would have loved to see what Wayland would have looked like and I am sure Ubuntu will be the 1st one to push it.

Downloaded and tested out the Fedora 15 beta last night on another machine, I must admit Gnome3 is really beautiful but the workflow is not as streamlined as they suggest. I also had to go an look for the firewall settings and run it manually, there is no shortcut anywhere nor does it exist in the settings menu (it seems there is a lot missing for the settings menu). It just seems all quite redundant now however after a rediscovered KDE :D

The problem is, Canonical DO NOT want Gnome 2 to be the default.

I dont see what difference that makes, unless, by boycotting unity you and all the others who dont like it hope they will revert back? and if they do then what? then you will have gnome classic- which you have at the moment anyway, and all the people who like unity, or would only have come on board with unity have nothing.

its like saying I will stop buying kellogs cerials because on top of rice crispies they have also introduced all bran flakes.

choice is a good thing, and thats exactly what it is, more choice.

in 10.10, I enabled compiz effects, downloaded a couple of themes, added a dock etc etc, basically set up ubuntu to run the way I wanted it to. Same with unity- its just the shell, get rid of it if you dont like it.

Good rant, ave. Why boycot Unity if you can get rid of it? ;) One should not keep this against Canonical; if they can get more users on board with Unity, let them do it, but not at the expense of other users who want to customize their default interface, but lack the know-how or time to do the customizations we can casually muster.

The bottom line is, nobody loses in this interplay as long as you do not switch distros. Switching to the beautiful KDE in my case was like a fresh breeze. But, man, it's still (K)ubutnu. I'll try Unity again in 6 months again, because my gut feeling says that Unity will undergo a super-major overhaul by then. It simply should. Or the users will kill it.

Exactly as you put it there. KDE is on top this time around. Quite unexpectedly so.

Going to download the KDE and test it at work on Tuesday. Since I'm getting a Windows7 laptop this week, I'm considering putting KDE onto the wifes work PC to make the transition between the laptop and her desktop easier - she needs Win7 for her Pastel and Scrapbooking software and will often use the two PCs at the same time.

On Unity, I love it for my netbook and keeping it - but for a desktop or a working enviroment where you need multiple windows/apps running, give it a big skip.

I have just read a review of Kubuntu 11.04, and the writer gave it a 5/5.
I know it is the internet and anyone has an opinion, but it might just be worth while trying.

Think I'm also gonna give Kubuntu a spin. Very curious, but the screenshots look very promising.

Screenshots of Kubuntu 11.04 here : http://www.thecodingstudio.com/open...x_distribution_sm=Kubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

*Damn you, MyWorld! *shakes fist* There goes my whole blerrie data bundle. :(

KDE isstruggling along on my netbook, it is a little bit more resource intesive than Unity (with Desktop Effects turned on) but I can get used to it. After this the only other real option would be Openbox, but I'll stick with KDE for a while longer.

Have you tried changing your compositing type to XRender?

You can always give Xubuntu a try, runs like a dream on netbooks

My netbook only has 2 weeks left to live, so I am not even going to upgrade it.

http://za.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/ will be replacing it

Found a horrible bug/glitch on my side... if I have a window open and I hover/click on the Ubuntu logo top left (to bring up the "start menu" *cough*), it only opens halfway. Then it greys out the menu on the left and enables the sub-menu. Say I want to click on Firefox, it either allows me, or more often than not, it closes the menu if I click on it. Annoying? Yes. Solution thusfar? Minimise all windows before doing it ;(

I wanted to upgrade....but now I dont think I will. Seems many guys aint happy with it...and I heard there are probs with Nvidia cards...which I have got in my laptop.

I will pass on this for now I think.

No issue with Nvidia drivers for me hey. ATI I know have given issues now.
With my reinstall I had a fresh install and simply "activated" thje Nvidia drivers. Where my original issue came in with my Unity crash, was my Nvidia drivers didn't update along with the rest of the install.
